Hello!
I have a MXL 990 mic that uses 48V±4V from phantom power. My mixer doesn't have phantom power and I bought a Whirlwind MicPower phantom power supply. The thing is this device is only 18V. The mic works at 18v, but am I missing something using the mic at this low volt? Quality perhaps? or volume? Can I continue using it like this or should I return it? Can someone help me?
Best Regards,
Willy.

I would not recommend using only 18V on a 48V Condenser. However, you may want to wait until someone with more experience comes back and responds.
I don't know what you got as far as a mixer, but why not pick up a cheap UB802 Behringer for $50 which has phantom power. You can always upgrade to the Yamaha 10/2 which is nicer for $99 which also has phantom power.

I noticed some of the phantom boxes were around $50 when I first got a condenser. But a preamp was about the same and had the phantom, so I got that and it was a good thing since I needed a bit of a boost and it can be used w/ phantom off for dynamics and the sound could be adjusted w/ the amount of tube drive. Or you could go solid state and maybe even get 2 channels. But the phantom boxes must be used a lot b/c there's a lot of them out there.

Well.. I ended up "upgrading" to the Yamaha 10/2 and the sound is much better than the one I had. So, thanks for the suggestion.
