I didn't know where else to go for help with this. I bought a headset at Radio Shack for voice conversations. Plugged it in correctly. I can hear through the headphones but get no voice out. I checked the volume controls and nothing is muted. When I ran the Sound test there was nothing. Took it back to the store and they ran a sound test...it worked for them. What do I do? Can anyone help?

Is this a headset/mic combo thing?

It should have a stereo plug for the earphone part, and a mono plug for the mic. Your plugging the mic jack (usually red) into the mic input on your soundcard and the earphone jack (usually green) into the stereo output on the soundcard?

Check the windows mixer: Double click the speaker icon near the clock in the lower right. Mic input up and not muted?

Check control panal>multimedia. Preferred recording device - there is something listed there?

Finally, what software are you using?

You may have the "mic" channel muted in what pops up when you doubleclick on the speaker icon... that by default pops up a "Playback" control panel.

Click on "File" -> "Properties" -> "Recording" -> make sure that the "Mic" box is checked -> "Ok" -> when it goes back to the mixer you'll notice it's slightly different. That there is the "Recording" mixer. It handles incoming signals (whereas the "Playback" controls work with outgoing signals). Make sure that the "Select" box is checked for the "Mic" channel. That simple. ^_^

What software should I be using? I've only tried to go through msn instant message. Do I need something else? Checked the volume and everything is the way it should be. When I checked on multimedia in the control panel the recording device was crystal codec audio. Thanks...still no sound from the mic detected. It's gotta be something really simple I'm missing.

Problem solved

When all else fails...read the directions. In my case, it was go to HP Help. Found the section on microphone problems and followed their instructions. In the volume control under recording, advanced properties I had to uncheck alternate microphone. I'm all set...thanks for all your help!

Well, you didn't need any other software, that's for sure. hehe

As far as "alternate mic".... I've NEVER seen that before... Then again, some sound cards put in weird freaky things into the sound control thingy
