Help needed in setting up my first home studio

I need some help. I'm new to all the recording equipment. I'm going to be using a PC. Can anyone help with equipment ie, software, other essentials, etc.
I've been recommended to get a Delta 1010 soundcard. any opinions on that?
any help is much appreciated. Thank you =]
