Help needed in choosing Software

Cubase seems to be the most widely choosen for pcs. I don't hear of too many people personally using Pro Tools but it is suppose to be one of the best as well. I'm sure there are tons using Pro Tools. For a macintosh computer Logic seems to be the best program.

I use Adobe Audition 1.5 (not version 1. Version 1.5 has new and great features. ;) ) Adobe supports surround sound if thats what you meant by 5.1. Adobe Audition used to be Cool Edit Pro and now I think its even better. Audition is a good wave editing program and really good for laying out tracks. Being also a wave editor it handles wave files really well. They have a lot of effects and filters to do tasks you need and want. Such as extracting vocals from a song, tons eq'ing... and even a built in compressor filter which I use a lot seemingly. That thing is fantastic.

The only downside is it doesn't support midi tracks as far as I know. (I researched exntensively and tried to get my midi controller to work...) I don't quite understand it because it supports midi, just not midi tracks. It recognizes the keys I'm pressing on my controller but theres nothing I can do with em... Wierd.

Audition is a real slept on program I think. Its fantastic. Adobe is the company which created the industry standard for graphics with Photoshop and Illustrator, etc. I think it would be safe to say that they are capable of creating a good sound editing, recording, and music creation program. I the new 1.5 version personally. Wouldn't use any other version but the newest.

Good luck with your search. Oh yeah you can try out adobe audition at adobes website for free. I just don't think you can save files with it. http://www.adobe.com

Oh also, if you go with pro tools you don't just need an mbox or a digi design anymore... M-Audio makes some hardware thats cheaper that supports pro tools now. I don't know if M-Audio is owned by pro tools or what, but just go to their websit to find out. www.m-audio.com and pro tools website www.protools.com

And maybe the reason I don't see to many people using pro tools that I know or run into, is because they can't afford it. Heh... who knows...

On pro tools web site they do got a users link that shows a lot of famous people that use Pro Tools. :)

Yes, i have heard of the m-powered pro tools, but none of the m-audio products which supports it has 2 ADAT I/Os and i don't think it supports 5.1 surround.

If you're wanting 2 ADAT IO's, then you're probably going to have to either go with a Pro Tools TDM system, or an RME interface. Lynx might have a couple of cards that will have 2 ADAT's as well. Any particular reason you need 2? Just curious.

Cause the mixer(Behringer DDX3216) I'm going to get has 2 ADAT I/Os, and yes, I'm thinking of getting the RME HAMMERFALL LE 9636, if i can't find anything better suited to me. I think I might be going for Cubase SX3, but i still have ages left until I'll have the money to start my studio, so this may change(knowing me it will)

If you can hold out longer (more money) I would go with the RME Fireface 800. I own one and it is amazing. The Hammerfall is a great unit, but I know that PCI is beginning to get phased out, and you could end up needing a computer upgrade down the line and your card won't work with any new motherboards. Where at least with firewire (and especially since the Fireface also supports the newer Firewire 800 as well as the 400 current standard). You know you will always be able to use your audio interface in any computer, you just might have to buy a firewire card for it, and those are dirt cheap. Just something to think about. And it has 2 ADAT IO's as well. :D

looks like a very nice piece of gear. I may well be tempted by this. How does it connect to the computer? Plus its £600 dearer that the HAMMERFALL. If i can save up that extra amount of money then this certainly will be a great option for me.

Only thing is, i don't think i'll be upgrading my pc for a few years. If i do, it'l be to get a larger harddrive, more ram, or something along those lines. And when i finally do upgrade i think i'll probably upgrade a lot more than just the pc, so may not even have a use for 2 ADATs. I really don't think i'll be able to afford the extra £600, but it does offer 8 jack I/Os which is good, because I'm also thinking of getting the Behringer MX9000, which has 8 bus.

I'm looking to spend £4000 max, on everything(except structural). Eg. Patchbay, 5.1 monitors, headphone amp, behringer ddx3216, behringer mx9000, headphones, mics, electric drumkit, computer, software, and cabling(think that's it)

What you will need is a DAW (Mac/PC) powerful enough to avoid hick-ups. If your budget is low, the DAW and the soundcard should allways be the highest priority. And at the very top, allways the DAW in my opinion.
If you dont have a good DAW it doesn´t hardly matter what soundcard, mics and gear you have as constant hick-ups (sync, pops and clicks and all kind of problems) is gonna kill your creativity flow anyways, making it very hard to work productive.
Get a good DAW and then a good soundcard. And build it from there - one step at a time.
Also - used gear can save you a lot of money.
