Help! need start-up software

My friend wants to just begin a home recording studio. I want
to get her some start-up software as a gift. Even if it is just
software for starting to learn digital audio editing. Anyone have
any suggestions?

A price range would help - this stuff ranges from (nearly) free to upwards of a thousand $... steve

range. not too big an investment. any suggestions?

A platform might be helpful as well. PC, Mac or Linux?

thanx again. not Mac is all i can say for sure. had someone recommend Cool Edit 2000 as helpful for just starting to learn digital audio editing. what do you think?
