I have a fostex vf160ex 16 track multi tracker which I run a rhode microphone into. The multi tracker is used for the phantom power. I need to now somehow get the multi tracker to send that signal to garagaband on my mac. how do i do this? Ive tried a million things but I can't et the signal from the multitrack to the mac.

Did a quick search - it should be as easy as vf160ex monitor out into your mac audio interface. As long as you're seeing signal on the vf160ex this should work - pan whatever channel your mic is hooked up to hard left (in the vf160ex) and connect L monitor out into your mac interface. This is the best I can help without more info - good luck!

As Mr June says.

Only there should be no need to pan the mic channel hard left or right. You'll need a lead that goes from two RCA pin jack (your main monitor outs form the Fostex) to a stereo mini jack (microphone input on Mac). Then make sure you check your "Preferences" in Garageband so that it's accepting signals from "Built-in Input" (that's your Mac's microphone input) Which is in preferences under the Audio/MIDI tab, and that the new track you've created to accept the new signal is set to Input Source; Stereo 1/2 (built-in input) and that monitor is switched on.

Then you will get a stereo track with the vocal on it. Of course you can also pan the mic hard left and then set Garageband input signal to "Mono 1 (built-in input) and then pan the track hard left. That way you can actually record two separate signals at the same time by panning one hard left and the other hard right (setting the second GB track to Mono 2 (built-in input). This can be a bit disorientating for monitoring as you record though.

Hope this helps.

Will this work ?
If the macs mini jack is a mic input, the signal from the fostex will be line level and therefore to hot for the mic input isn't it ?

Yes it'll work, I was being lax in my terminology. The mic input on a Mac is actually a stereo line level input. :)

The other way would be to buy a USB Audio interface, which will allow the main monitor outs from the Fostex into the Interface inputs then connect via USB to the MAC (that's how I transferred recordings from my Yamaha AW16G into Garageband). Of course as most USB interfaces come with Phantom Power, that would make the Fostex redundant. :)
