Hello, I just rented a downstairs apt in a fourplex. I have a extra room now with a walk in closet. I now have the option to make the walk-in closet a vocal booth but I never had use a closet for recording before. So..how should I pad the walls? Use egg crate foam or those 703 panels that peopel are talking about.

I mostly record vocals only and acoustic guitar sometimes. The close is about 6 feet long. I am on a $100 budget.

Any suggestions would help. I just joined today and Have been reading articles from you all for a week already regarding studio building etc.

Do you plan to record guitar and vocals at the same time?

Considering the $100 to spend I would personally stay out of the closet unless you can afford to fully treat the walls with 703 or thick foam (3 or 4 inches thick). I would guess your going to have alot of close reflections in that closet. One thing you may want to try is recording vocals in the closet and in the main room as they sit now. That will give you an idea of where you will have an easier starting point. See what room sound better.
Ive recorded in small boths that where great but they where treated to beat hell. Using less gain and chokng up (geting to 8 inches or so away) will help with room sound too.

I have been able to get good results close in on a cardioid mic with a couple heavey comforters hung right behind be spaced about 6 inches from the wall.
I center my self on that wall so that the side walls and opposite wall are as far away as possible and the wall behind me is treated.

Just a thought.
