it seems that a guitar pickup doesnt have enough juice to plug direct into a sound card with out a mixer or such huh? latency and what not? what would be good to use to fill the void cheaply?
i used to do the same with a guitar pro, trust me, ull never achieve the sound of a well mic'd amp. if ur tryin to get good sound in a quiet enviornment ur best bet is to mic in the closet.
Latency? Latency has absolutely nothing to do with this. Latency is the time it takes for the digitized signal from the soundcard's converters to travel through the computer, run through software effects or whatever, through the recording application, and finally make it back out the speakers. It's only an issue if you try to monitor the signal after it's gone through all that.
Your issue is simply that a sound card accepts line level signals, and electric guitars don't put out line level signals, they need to be preamped to reach line level.
Many amps have a Direct Out or Line Out jack in the back, perhaps you have one that does already.
If you want to go DI cheap- Behringer VAMP II is OK. It is not true that you will always get better results mic'ing an amp, although very often, you will. That depends on the amp, the room, mic placement, and other factors. The VAMP II is almost the only piece of Behringer gear I can recommend, other than ECM8000. Later on, for jollys, jack the VAMP into a power amp, then a cab, then mic the cab.-Richie
yeah i got the guitar port but itll only take one inst. at a time and i was trying to get two going one through the port and one through the line in i think a mixers gonna fix me up
