So basic question for you. If you're recording w/a DAW on a home pc, and you have an audio interface with mic preamps that aren't very good, can that be solved by buying separate preamps?

What audio interface are you using? What trouble are you having?

Assuming that:
A) Your problem actually lies in the preamp - there are usually a lot of other things that will impact your results before you'll hear the difference in pres - and;

2) Your interface has line level inputs that can take the output from the new pre without running through its own;

Then maybe. :D

Many "line level inputs" actually run through the microphone preamp. If the topology of that preamp is a culprit to a nasty sound, it is a crap shoot as to whether a different preamp will help or not. Often, bad topologies reveal themselves most when boosting signals (something they don't have to do with a line level signal feeding it).

So, it really depends.

If you are not happy with your sound, and you are asking this questions, I suspect that you probably have MANY other things to learn about recording that can have a HUGE impact on your results.
