So I'm just curious how people think I should set this up. I have:

Soundcraft M12 (Info)
Delta 1010 (Info)
Sonar 3.1.1

I'm using mostly pres from my m12, but also 2 chameleon labs 7602s.

Here's what I'm looking for: I want to be able to monitor through my monitors (either out the 1010 or using the m12 monitor outs) as well as be able to send a headphone mix out (fromt he board). Also I need to be able to monitor the 7602s in the headphone send.

My assumption is to have all the direct outs from the pres go to the ins of the 1010. Then use the out 1 & 2 of the 1010 as the monitor mixer and send it to the console (as what though, pb? normal channels?). With the monitor mixer I can then use that signal to power to my monitors (off the board) and send from the headphone jack to my headphone amp?

I feel like an idiot posting this because I always get it to work in the end, but there just has to be an easier setup or whatever using the m12 for my monitors. I usually end up having the monitor mixer outs to my monitors so getting the signal to the board for headphone mixes becomes a pain in the ass and I have to do crazy things like turn off my monitors between takes since muting them on the monitor mixer would mute the headphone out too or something.

Andybody have any advice?

You could send outs 1&2 on the Delta to a couple of inputs on your mixer and then send some outs from your mixer to your monitors.

From there, send outs 3&4 on the Delta to your headphone amp. Then when you don't want to hear your monitors, just turn them down on the mixer and throw on the headphones.

As for monitoring the pre's....I think you're referring to direct monitoring with no latency...In the Delta control panel, you have the ability to route any input to any output and still record at that original input. So, you could route that input to the main outs or headphone outs.

Make sense?

This is if you want to leave the mixer in the chain. You could take it out if you wanted...

Other than the pres to direct out the mixer isn't really in the recording chain. It being in the monitoring chain is fine by me.

I would send a stereo signal from the Delta back to the mixer's playback inputs, as I believe that's their intended use. Connect your monitors to the Monitor outputs on the board. PFL the Playback and adjust the Playback level until you're getting a good level on the meters, and then use the Monitor volume to control the Monitor level.

I'd use a pair of pre-fade Aux sends to set up your headphone cue mix. You could use one, or a pair. If you're board can't send the Playback signal to the Aux outputs, you might have to use another output on your Delta to send the recorded portion of the cue mix to your headphone amp while you use your Aux send to send the live portion from the board.

As for monitoring the outboard pres, I would set the Delta to normal the inputs that the outboard pres are plugged into to the corresponding outputs (that is, if you plug a pre into Delta input 4, that signal would show up on Delta output 4 as well...I don't know if the Delta can be set up like this, but if my ancient Layla could be, then I don't see why it wouldn't be able to). Then send those outputs to line inputs on channels on your board and use the Aux sends on those channels to send to the cue mix.

That's just how I would do it.

I own a delta 1010 rackmount myself. I have the mic preamps going directly into the inputs of the delta 1010. All outputs from the delta go into my mixer.
Here is my delta outs settings

1&2 outs (Wav out)
3&4 H/w Out
5&6 H/w Out
7&8 H/w out

this way I can monitor my instruments while dubbing.
There is no latency problems with this setting.

example

drum loop can be playing on 1&2, with me on guitar (3&4) and my friend on bass (5&6).

I hope that this made sense. Let me know.

peace

Adam, if I'm using the aux send for the headphone mix, how will the headphone mix get the playback?

Buuut there is no aux out selection for the playback bus, which is what the players will need to hear for overdubs.
