Help me record drums!

Hey this is my first post to this forum. and holy shit am i ever glad i found this bulletin board... so, so, so many questions.

So here's the first.

I've got a small collection of mics i use to record, and i use ridiculously long trial and error periods to get a good quality sound out of almost any instrument.

I've been having some trouble with drums. A full kit, kick, snare, hihat, 2 rack toms, 1 floor tom, a crash/ride, crash, and a ride.

I have:
AT2020 Condensor
Shure SM57
AKG D880
AKG D 72 S

I am looking into maybe buying a new mic if it's necessary... i was thinking maybe one of those 112 standard kick drum mics... but i'm not sure. How would you guys mic this drumkit, and what mic would you buy as the missing piece, to get a solid dancey drum sound?

IMO, you'd benefit greatly by adding a kick mic, the D112 is great, I use a Shure Beta52 that's great, too.

A matched pair of overheads will do wonders for you, too. A former board member is making mic's and selling them cheap. Everyone seems to be really happy with them, I haven't used them. Here's a link to his Studio Store

snap to that. D112 is great, had a lot to do with that particular mic & I love it

would you go SDC or LDC for the OHs EZ???? I normally use LDCs as my only SDCs are C1000s

You know, I go back and forth on LDC vs. SDC for overheads, myself. Currently I'm in a LDC mode.

X2 also on getting a good kick mic. That will do wonders for your overall sound as most people tend to get the kick wrong. Beta52, D112, Audix D6 are all great.

From some of the reviews I've read, the AT2020 is quite crispy on snare drum. Might free up your 57 for tom duty.

I use exactly that. A D112 on the kik, 2 C1000's OV's, and an SM57 on the snare. I'm happy with it.
 
Thanks a lot for the replies. i'm recording in our jam space. it's a fairly big room, high ceiling. i'd say over all dimensions probably about... 10m x 6m x 10m.

in terms of the overhead, i don't have a lot of money. would it work to get another at2020 and use two of them as overheads? is it key to have the SAME mic for both overheads? maybe i could get another better quality condenser and use it AND the at2020 as overheads?

What is the best kick drum mic for the money? like i said, me no rich :)

I also just looked into those naiant MSH1s. does anyone have any experience recording drums with those? It's impossible not to be tempted at that price.

You'll like the msh1's. I've heard several very reputable people on this site rave about the price vs. quality of the mics. I'm sure they're probably right up there with the likes of MXL and so on which is totally useable. As soon as I get some cash I'm ordering several of his mics, oh and I think the warranty on them is pretty nice too.

we probably answered every question you have, but we don't mind doing it over and over again, no matter what anyone says.

... just dont ask 'wutz da b3st mIc 4 RAP VoCaLs" and i wont have a problem with ya ;)

(btw i do like rap music a lil..)

RAMI I used to use C1000s all the time & then got SE2200As & my comparisons that I have done have always left the C1000s wanting. Not that careful EQing hasn't solved my problems along with placement

I do use C1000s live as I find the d/cap very helpful indeed

I've been fancying a pair of MXL sdc's, what say the threadsters to MXL

EZ what are your sdc's out of curiosity???

my drumming friend that I work in a function band with has a £60 t-bone sdc & it rules IMO
 
i hate to be a loser... but the d880 is killer on rap vocals, if you keep a condenser a little further away. :)

if you don't like rap... give the following songs a try, and if you still don't like it, i will rest my case. as fellow producers you will recognize the genius more than most... the producer in gangstarr, dj premiere, is world famous in the rap world as one of the first producers to start using jazz influences in his beats. open your mind and give it a shot :)
