I am a true newbie to recording but am eager to learn...I am using one of the digital all in one recording consoles (AKAI DPS 16). I know this machine has its natural limitations, but it should also be capable of much more than I am doing now. In terms of mixing I may need a little clarity...
1. In the eq section of the mixer I have a three band eq (low, mid and high). The mid has a width function that goes from 0.5 to 16 in 0.5 increments. What does the width affect?
2. In tweaking the highs what should I be listening for?
3. With the lows, is it a general rule of thumb to apply some sort of compression? I have toyed with this idea but my vocals still seem to be too upfront or drowned out during parts of the song.
In general are there some common frequencies and levels that work primarily with certain voices and instruments?
I guess these questions are fairly general so any form of help would be great....
