Ive got it narrowed down to three....1)FMR RNP/RNC 2)M-Audio TAMPA 3) ART Pro Channel....i just need something to use for vocals, drum overheads, guitar etc...that will give the best overall sound....Ill be using a MXL v69 for vocals, sm57 for guitar and mxl603s for overheads...if that helps anyone pick....but my DAW board isnt cutting it for compressor and preamps alone so i need something better. Thanks!

Of that set, I'd do the RNP/RNC. However, that's about $700. For $800, the new Joemeek twinQ would give you a lot of versatility. Two very usable channels with compression and sweepable EQ.-Richie

Voicemaster Pro.

See how many opinions you get when your looking for a simple answer.

You bastards...gotta confuse me more...i actually can get both the RNP and RNC on ebay with a tray for prolly udner 550...shoudlnt have told ya guys that u might go snag it now....hahah....ill check out those other ones as well...i think i just read the tampa is only single channel i need two...so that cancels that one out....anything else in that range let me know.

Voicemaster Pro is a single channel too. Cross that one off your list.

Looks like those other suggestions are all only 1 channel as well but the voicemaster pro looks really nice....its so hard to pick 1 thing nowadays even after comparing a 1000 things online and reading a ton of reviews...guess just gotta jump at some point. The joe meek looks interesting as well and that is two channels...alittle pricey for me...back to the reserach!

Since you need two channels, eliminate any single channel pres unless you can afford two of them. I personally would go with the RNC/RNP combination. It would work on any of the sources you want to record, drums, voice, guitar, whatever.

The Joe Meek is an interesting suggestion, but my reservation about it is that Meek gear has very much its own sound. So if you want all your tracks to sound like that, great. But chances are you won't. So for your primary pre/compression recording channel I think it's better to go with gear that is less noticably colored, which the RNC/RNP is.

I'm basing that opinion on my experience with the Joe Meek eq and compressor that I own.

You might also consider picking up 2 ThreeQ's, which would probably run you between $300-400. I picked up a pair for a good price and they've been serving me well for overheads, acoustic guitar and some vox.

BTW, the pres alone on these new Meeks are not colored, and the color you do get with the compressor and eq are quite a nice addition indeed.

Yea there is another post up here about the new Twin Q so ive been following that tryin to compare that to the RNP/RNC it would be nice to have the added eq in there....but also would probably run me alittle more to get that as appossed to the FMR stuff....any other suggestions on dual preamps like the Twin Q and FMR that I should consider in that price range?

Here's some food for thought...

The Joemeek TwinQ is a cheap China made preamp. For example... the Joemeek ThreeQ is only about $150... and it has the same preamp in it as the Joemeek TwinQ. After you take out the compressor, EQ, etc, you end up with about a $15 preamp.
