i need a 6 drum setup, i can spend about 500 bucks
work your magic. thanks, tom.

Let's see... if you can buy second hand:

AKG D112 (100 2nd hand, 150 new)
4x SM-57 (200-250)
2x Behringer ECM8000 (2x 35 new, so cheap, buy them new)

(also the ECM8k's are omni, you won't be needing a hat mic)

Well, you've got some cash left for mic stands (20 each) and cables.

You could off course go with any of the following posters' chinese mics.

I might stay clear of the fusion series at least get the pack without those nasty overheads.

deadpoints in the ballpark, as he predicted I differ with the overheads and kick.

ATM25 (audio Technica) kick mic- $135.00
4 x sm57- more like $280- $300 new
oktava MC012 2 for $99.00 (GC current special)

realistically about $500-$535 total tax and all

you could try the Shure PG series mic pack at $245.00 and add the 2 Oktavas for $99.00...($345 total) use the kick mic from that pac on your floor tom and still buy a great dedicated kick mic (D-6, D112, ATM 25, $135-$150)...I have heard the PG series over the Fusion. and those mics sound pretty good on drums.

I'm using 2 oktavas for overheads $100 (for 2 at GC)
Audix D6 i got for $150.00 at GC
2x sm57's (10" and 12" toms) $160.00
1 CAD KBM 412 kick mic that I use on my 14" floor tom with great results! it was $49.00 (I find the sm57's to be just fine on the smaller toms, but for the floor they get a bit thin) the CAD kick mic is great for floor toms (but not very good on a kick if your thinking that right about now?)

my total was $460.00 (sounds like you'll need one more mic) if thats another 57 or a second CAD for a second floor tom, your still right around $500 with a real good set-up!

cords and stands?..well. hope you have some layin around somewhere!

heres some drum mic options, good luck!
