I thought putting in a second hard drive would be simple. Oh Lord, what a f$^%$ing mess. I lost my sound cards (both), and my puter is smelling like burnt rubber. I think I must have pulled out some stuff. Can somebody link me to a good info page?

I dont know why the sound cards are not recognized. Are there any wires that are attached to them that could have been pulled out? They seem firmly in place.

Is it possible I pulled out a wire for a fan? Smells like it. Help me, Hold me, I am frightened. Time to sign off before computer burns my house down. Kirk Out.

Does your machine boot at all anymore? The smell of burning electronics is never a good sign.

It should have been a simple process.

Current status?

Get real help!

It looks like you have gone beyond the simple issues of installing hardware onto your puter. You have entered the realm of diagnostics which quite frankly isn't where you want to be. The smell you have could be from frying your power source by adding the new drive or any other of 100 possibilities. It's time for you to take your puter to a shop and let the peeps with the diagnostic tools at least find your problem before it gets worse. You can always opt to fix it yourself or not(seeing the luck your having). At any rate, good luck.

I had that same sort of aroma emanate from my Braun Juicer yesterday when some apple slices jammed the blade and the motor fought to restart. The juice tasted a little weird, but I couldn't find any damage when I took it apart.

Discarding the hysteria from your plight, your computer works but your soundcards are not recognized?

Yes Doc, the Puter is working, but does nor recognize my Darla24 or Soundblaster Live Cards. It recognizes the Crap sound card that come with the puter (which is disabled). I pulled out the new hard drive. I need to do stuff on wednesday, I will deal with the new hard drive later. The smell is gone, I guess I need a new-different fan with a second hard drive? This computer is very small and cramped (HP Pavillion 6545C). Cmon Gidge (I mean DD), you have roughly the same puter, help me out here bro (and give me back my Scooby-Doo Avatar, dag nabit).

My query: How to I get the puter to recognize the sound card ( I only use the Darla24 these days). Should I take it out and reinstall it?

10,000 people registered here, and I am the only one in a metro area of 2 million, how can this be? Cmon fellas, come visit ol DK in Cleveland, drinks are in me. I mean on me. No I don't.

Hold the Phones

Update:

Since I am a computer idiot, it appears that I unloosened the Darla24 Card. All is swell there, up and running again.
My Question now: How important is it for a second fan. When I opened the puter, it had been on all day, is that why it smelled a bit? Thanx Guys, DK

A second fan? Why do yo uneed a second fan? I personally use a fan on the processor (Athlon 750Mhz) and a main system fan.

Ew Ew That Smell

One of the ways manufacturers are getting away with making computerparts so cheap is by skipping a washing stage where you clean parts after soldering them. Downside is us consumers have to smell it burn off. That could be your smell but I doubt it, I say you still should take your puter to a techy to diagnos it because it will probably do just fine till you need it the most.
