Hi all

I am about to tear all my hear out after searching through hundreds of posts on sequencers and soundcards. I am looking to do instrumental guitar songs on a dedicated pc. I cant decide what to go with.I can already use Cubase so i am swinging towards getting this but i dont know what version to get.Do i need to spend £500 on SX3 or will one of the cheaper ones do? Finally, what soundcard is best suited to my needs? i dont need an abundance of inputs.

Is the M-box deal as good as getting Cubase for my needs?

Thanks alot for any help recieved, i really am starting to go mad

I'd say go with the sx3 and get a delta 1010 because my guess is you'll be wanting to record more than just single guitar tracks in the future.

SX has more bells and whistles, but I am very happy with cubase se, which can now be had for well under $100. SE limits you to 48 audio tracks (I haven't come close to using this many yet), whereas SX is limited only by your processor. I think SX comes with some better plugin effects, but there are so many other plugins available that I rarely use the steinberg ones anyway.

I've never used ProTools. Some say it's great, though the version that comes with the Mbox is a limited version. I think if you are familiar with cubase, and happy with how it works for you, stick with it.

Thanks for the replys

What differences between SX3 and SL3 would really affect me?
Sx3 is alot of money over here in Scotland, about £500.

I am swinging towards buying the EMU 1212m soundcard. Apparently it is the best sounding card out there in that price range. Any opinions?

Hey - are you at school or university or anything? You can get Cubase on an educational licence. I can't remember what places do it, but last time I checked SX could be had for closer to £200.

I'd be wanting to go with M-Audio or Echo simply because I'm not a fan of Creative's drivers. Also, something about having a souped-up Soundblaster doesn't appeal. I dunno.

For me, I just want the converters, no fancy stuff, cos I've got all the preamps I need. Just analog I/O. Everything else is less important.

I am at college on a music course. Do you know where i can get the educational liscense from?

I have just been looking at some of the posts on here and i think ive almost changed my mind to the M-audio Delta 1010LT. I think the emu just looks a bit to complicated for me.

With the delta, where would i plug the xlr outs from my Line 6 fextone 3, in the xlr mic inputs or in the jack inputs? The flextone outs level can be changed so it dosnt need a preamp but could i still use the xlr mic inputs?

I would probably still mic that amp ... but failing that, use one of the line-ins.

My feeling on the 1010lt is that it's light on balanced inputs. If you don't need more than 4 ins at a time, get the Delta 44 or 66 - balanced inputs will prove a sound investment in the long run.

As for educational licences ... I'm never sure. Try Turnkey or Dolphin for starters, or run a search. I found one really cheap place through google once, but I can't remember what it was!!!

I was under the impression that balenced inputs only make a significant differance if long cables are being used, is this true?

Maybe. I only use short cables but with my monitors, amps, a CRT computer screen etc all in close proximity ... I noticed a big difference in signal level and cleanness when I changed to balanced.

But you should be ok, so if the 1010lt has some other features you want that the smaller ones don't have, then go for it!
