Help me figure this out, please

I download Iomega's RecordIt software. I pluged my guitar into an amp of mine and plug the amp's headphone jack into my computer's microphone jack. It recorded it, but the sound it under a lot of static and is very low. I also tried miking my amp with the micro/headphone headset that came with the computer. This did absolutely nothing. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
 
Make sure you are using the "line-in" and not the "mic-in". Check your "windows" mixer and adjust the line-in recording level.

Where would I find this "windows" mixer? I am trying to record some tapes from my stereo onto my hard drive so that I can clean them up with Sound Forge XP and then put them on CD-Rs. I can hear the tape playing through my sound card, into the speakers, but it's not being recorded. Where can I find this recording level adjustment? Thanks a lot, in advance.

You can use Sound Forge to record your tapes. Look for a setting in the software that relates to "wav in", "wave out" and set these to your sound card. Using a cable, 2 RCA's to a single 1/8" stereo connector, plug this into the line-in on the sound card. I dont use SF XP but I would guess that you have some type of level indicators before and after you hit record. You should see a level here coming off your tape.

Go to "Control Panel" and then click "Mutilmedia" look at the "Audio" tab and also check under "Advanced" for mixing devices. My Win95 has the option to put that little speaker icon right beside the clock at the bottom right of my desktop. Mess around with it and you'll find it.
