Folks,

I am working on mic placement on a bran new triple rectifier and matching cabinet. I am very close to the target tone when listening through the monitors. A couple more days of tinkering and I should have it.

My question, if answered, should help me speed up that process just a tad. The question is, how loud should I crank that thing when recording? I know there is some kind of minimum gain setting to get that cab up to peak performance. But is there a setting I should shoot for on the master? Or is there a distinct sign that I have turned it up to loud?

FYI I am micing through a presona tube pre and beta SM57a into lower end 24 bit sound card and nuendo.

Thanks \m/

There's no real rule. You want it loud enough to sound good and not so loud it distorts the mic or preamp or causes the neighbors to call the cops.

If your only tracking the guitar then just set the amp up so it sounds good to you. Then through the mic up and get it on tape!

No.

If you want that "sound" that dominates most records then you would probably want the Master at full-bore so that the power tubes are working at their full potential, but thats up to you.

One thing though with mic placement.......if you are after than super lowend chunck then you might even want to try micing the back of the cab...assuming its an open back.

Actually it is the standard recto cab 4X12 with celestian vintage 30s. :)

If you're gonna turn that Triple Rectumfrier up all the way I hope you live waaaay underground, cause it'll be really loud.

I tend to agree with you Matty. (y) Which is why I innitiated this post. This thing is really really loud. 150W through a 380W cabinet. I suppose I'll crank it a little and give it a try, but so far I crank it to 3 and you can't be in front of it. Good I suppose for close mic'ing cause you dont get a hell of a lot of room bleed but...

How does it sound at lower volumes? Does it have to be cranked to sound good?
