Help Making Cables: specifically cable sizes, and connectors

I'm interested in getting a bunch of different connectors and about 100 ft of cable so I can make some short run TRS, XLR, TRS->XLR, etc...

The problem is, how do I know if the TRS connectors will fit on the same cable the XLR's do. I know this is probably a stupid question, but can someone explain the size of cables to me, and how I would figure this out.
