Help just to get started

My cousin has left a thread on hear before (hello jay) but now he has directed me to the sight i can post my problem myself.

i have just started using cakewalk XL 2004 but when i try to record my bass i experience delay and it drops out all the time. i have suspitions about the problem but maybe someone can help me out.
i have a Creative sound blaster PCI sound card. is this powerfull enough? my latency is 29.9 msec or 30.0 if i change the sampling rate. this seems quite high to me but i can't seem to reduce it. the sound is un distorted when i use driver modes MME (32 bit) or (16 bit) but it dosen't like Asio or WBM/KS. is MME suficient? i thought the problem might also be that i have my bass pluged directly into the sound card. do i need a mixer or something to change the signal.

as you can tell i am desperatly in need of some guidance. please help

Are you using Input Monitoring? If so, you are going to have major problems with 30 ms latency. SB sound card is your main problem. You might be able to get it lower with some tweaking, but probably still not to the level you need (particuarly with MME drivers).

You can turn off Input Monitoring, that should cure the delay problem, but if you are DI'ing the bass, you will not have any way to monitor what you are playing.

ya, MME drivers are outdated for sure, a lot of headaches have been releaved with the use of WDM or ASIO drivers. If you ahve any spare change around the house, i would suggest an m-audio, e-mu or tascam entry level recording card. These will give you the hook ups you need (preamps, line in's midi etc) as well as superior drivers taht will solve your problems i think.

thanx for your help guys. do you know how much an m-audio, e-mu or tascam entry level recording card will cost. and will it be easy to fit myself (considering i'm not very computer litterate)
