I am wanting to build several acoustic panels for my drum platform which is 7'x8'. Due to the design I have limited space for my ceiling panels. In a nutshell I only have 3 1/2" to work with. QUESTION IS...

Do I build a panel with:

1. 3" of Rockwool with 1/2" air gap or
2. 2" of Rockwool with 1 1/2" of air gap

What is better - an extra inch of air gap or extra inch mineral wool?

Thank you

i *think* they'll work just the same. i'd go with 2" w/ 1.5 air gap simple because if you frame them with 1x4 pine planks, they are actually 3.5" wide - perfect for your space.

Guys,

A full fill with OC 703 or rock wool is always a better absorber. Adding an air gap increases the absorption of the panel cheaply, that's all. It is more economical to use 2 - 2" slabs of absorbent and a 2" air space rather than using 3 - 2" slabs of absorbent.

Cheers,
John
