I am thinking of going digital and I am not sure I understand things very well, so where else to get help than your friendly BBS 
I am currently running 2 Maudio 1010lt's with 16 independent mic pre’s feeding the sound cards. I use Sonar 4. I would like to step up to some form of outboard digital device. I am thinking firewire; maybe the Mackie Onyx or something like that. However, I don’t know what I need, what I can get rid of, etc. For example, if I go with a PreSonus Firepod, then what else do I need? Do I just run a firewire cable from the FirePod to my firewire card or do I need specific sound card as well? Any information would be helpful as I am pretty green on the digital stuff. All I do know is that I want 16 independent channels of audio coming into my computer. Beyond that I am all ears.
