ok hear me out. i love recording ok. and i can record some sh** when im enabled. but lately ive been really frustrated because i cant get my speakers and my headphones and mic and my guitar and keybaord all set up and it pissing me off. so i joined this community and created this thread in hopes that a kind gentle soul will gleam their grace upon my pitiful soul and save me from this agony. i have a usb audio interface, some nice headphones, some nice speakers, a piece of crap usb microphone, an old non-midi keyboard that i can use with auido cables, an elctric guitar, and i have ableton live 8 on my computer. i have very bare necessities. i just dont know how to set this shit up. help!

should i have my headphones plugged in to my computer or the interface? or should i have i my speakers plugged into the interface and my headphones plugged in to my computer....or the speakers plugged in to the interface ad headphones plugged in to the speakers?

---------- Update ----------

and even if i get that figured out i have the problem with the input and output with ableton

Hi,
The audio interface is in charge of all ins and outs.
Speakers, headphones, microphones...they all plug into your audio interface.

In fact, your audio interface directly replaces the built-in soundcard which, technically, is an audio interface.

USB microphone is not really compatible though. You'll want a standard microphone with XLR connector to plug into your interface.

What Steen said... And it should just be a matter of pointing Ableton at the interface for which you have installed the latest drivers.

I think part of your problem is going to be your USB microphone and your USB interface. Ableton allows only one ASIO device. Once you select your audio interface, that is where your speakers and headphones would plug into.

What is your audio interface?

thanx though you guys...good to know about the interface

---------- Update ----------

ive messed around with my buddies setup which was not much more than what i have so i know it can be done

Your interface is fine. Looks like you have it selected in Ableton, double check your input and output config and make sure they are enabled. Then on the master, make sure that is the output. I usually make the inputs mono, but if you are recording your keyboards, you will want them stereo

Only thing you need to sort out is a microphone. I suggest getting a decent Sure 58 just to get you started, but anything with XLR and your interface does have phantom power in case you are looking for a microphone that requires it.

But you will not be able to use your USB microphone as an input when your Steinberg is plugged in as technically, the USB microphone is a USB interface. Suggest get a little mic with XLR cable and you will be able to record vocals. If you are just doing keyboards, plug in L/R from keyboards to your interface and adjust your inputs so they don't clip.

ok so screw my microphone..i knew that was a piece of crap anyway. so....my headphones go in to the headphones port...and my speakers gooooo.....?

The inputs are selected. Plug in the headphones to the interface and you should be able to hear what is in Ableton once you have recorded something or bring up an Ableton sample project.

For your speakers, I don't know how they connect, since they are creative labs speakers. Probably have a single computer headphone plug (the small type). For now, what I would do is find an adapter for your speaker plug, use the headphone out on the Steinberg, use the headphone out on the speakers.

That should get you started.

awesome. i have and use the adapter. i have a bunch of adapters. what does the 2/R and 1/L mean? is that for left and right speakers. because i can seperate them

Is that an 1/8" stereo input on the speakers?

If it is you want to get a cable that has the 1/8" stereo plug on one end and a pair of 1/4" plugs on the other.

Your input accepts stereo. So you either need two (1/2) on one end (1/2) from the Steinberg) to stereo to the input on the Creative or, If you go stereo from Steinberg (headphone out) to Input to the speaker and just use the speakers headphone output with your headphone.

Something like this: Cable Connection then reduce the single with an adapter.

hmmmm
