ok, some help needed i dont have a clue abt home recording but i got a Samson C01U USB Microphone and all seems well with it, it does its job fine, but other people seem to get a better sound out of it ( a few people from the hell hole that is myspace...!) mine still has a "hiss" in the background and isnt as clear. im using audacity to edit etc, can anyone recomend better software? or were i might be going wrong???

thanks for any help :)

hiss = mic
you can either try to scrub it out with some noise filters, or some clever eq, but having no experience with "USB" mics, i would be leery at best.

All I can tell you is that the sound comes from your mic, or the
"pre" which in this case is a USB interface. Think I would look there first.

also, if you are using Audacity to jack up the gain, such a function will introduce a crapload of hiss. I know, I've tried it. The better route would be to just jack up the signal during recording - meaning, a mic preamp, or at least maxxing the recording line levels of your soundcard.

There is probably a whole world of problems going on for you right now. Try this www.tweakheadz.com and read the guide. Read it over and over and over. Oh and look for a section about gain staging. That may help you a bit.
