It's a ton better!
Yep, stick to using the mic on a stand, because it made a major improvement.

I like the change that takes place at 2:30 into the song...it makes me think of a Sabbath song on Sabotage called Megalomania.

Pretty cool man.

Myx62 - good idea for the outro.. thanks man

mixmkr - hey mix, I started the mix from the ground up again.. I can only mix 6 tracks at a time, so I just started building it up again until it was done.. it sounds very close to the original, I am surprised the difference is even audible, but Lt. Bob noticed a difference too.. cool! BTW, I'm just glad you comment.. If you hear anything really wrong, I hope you would let me know.. thanks d00d!

participant- hey Chad, what a difference not holding the mic makes.. I still can't believe it.. someone should have said something earlier, and I think you tried to.. the whole vocal things had me down because I was able to pick out flaws in everyone elses recording, but couldn't get my own in check.. I still can't, but it's getting better from here on in.. thanks man.. Still waiting for some new tunes from you!

Lt. Bob - hey Steve, cool! As I was telling mixmkr, I started the mix from the ground up.. I can only mix 6 tracks at a time, so I just kept building.. I may have altered some of the levels in the process.. man, I should have started holding the mic a long time ago.. I can really hear how bad all the other vocals sound now.. thanks for checking in Steve!

WATYF - forgot to tell you I almost peed in my pants when I saw your avatar and location! 'just skippin along, singin a song!' that really is perfect for you! :D thanks for checking it out.. I wonder what WATYF means?

Freudian Slip - very cool to hear that at least something in my life improved a little.. I'm still trying to nail the vocal sound, so all suggestions were appreciated.. thanks!

Kramer - funny you should mention the SR-16.. I used it with a Roland TD-8 sound module.. I put the beats together with the SR-16, but play the sounds from the Roland.. Your last tune was killer, so I would say you are more than qualified to rip apart anyone within ear shot! :D thanks for the positive word Krametorrie!

joro - el joro, yeah man, I was going for the run out of tape/time type ending.. kinda like a movie that didnt end neatly.. :D It does need something.. maybe I'll have a long fade out or something.. thanks man!

dtb - very good points you bring up about the hands free style! :D all extra bonuses.. thanks Dan!

Tim Brown - Sabotage is probably my favorite Sabbath album of all time.. (next to the first one) very cool! thanks man!

thanks again guys!

lyrics

letting it slip through your hands
once again
holding it best as you can
although it's dead
I'm guessing it slipped through your hands
so why pretend?

My girl is drunk as hell
plays games with herself
her mind is disrepaired
she knows I don't care
My girl can hold a tune
that can kill the mood
seems like such a waste
I found you soo late

Just a tragedy in the making
another disappointment that I create
I didn't realize you were faking
I should have never trusted you, my mistake

Everything is breaking around me
I finally get to see the things I don't need
all the pressure is starting to drown me
holding up my failure for you to see

The kick is kickass. The bass is huge. It may be that I'm listening perhaps louder than usual, but the drums are great and huge. You sound more Ozzy than Ozzy here. Truly a vocal performance. Nothing wrong. Perhaps the cymbal (or ride?) could be louder. I'd really liked some bridge before the faster part, but it's no use talking to you about bridges :D Oh, the guitar is great as usual. The outro came out of nowhere and wasn't that fitting. Maybe it would have fitted better with a bridge :D I think that outro could be a great intro for another song (or maybe for this, but you already have a cool intro on this one. I wouldn't have used that outro, but do what you like. It's your style to do a way different change at the end :D The production is great, the song arrangement could have used some work (or bridges)

(ok, maybe I'm trying to add some subliminal messages *BRIDGE* here :D )

"What a difference not-holding-the-mic makes..."
"It still hooks up in the same... fucking... place... :D"

(uhm... those who don't get that, go to sam's page and dl "What A Difference")

I'm just relieved this song is about a chick... not about, uh... participant :) specially this:

"I didn't realize you were faking
I should have never trusted you, my mistake"

(phew... nobody knows I'm just fakin' it here... and everybody still trusts my judgement :))

I'll catch this again, Sam, when I'm at home (playin' hooky from work here for a minute...)

Hey Sam,
.........godamn.

Youve found the answer man. This sounds a "TON" better. The out of control mids have disappeared. Ive never tried recording vocs by hand, and honestly, i didnt see the corrolation between using a stand and the obtrusive mid problem you were having. I see now that it must have been a gain issue (occasionally being too close). These are some of the best vocs i have heard from you. ....just killer!!!!! What else changed besides the stand..... .....settings wise..... ...just trying to get a clear picture.

.....fuckin bravo man!!!! Outstanding!!!!!!

G w/ a big fuckin' 5 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*this response contains absolutely no fluff and is intended to convey an honest response to a job....
fuckin' WELL done!!!

I have one of the first mixe's dl'ed, so i'm listening to each back to back. The improvement in vox on V.3, stand's out so much, that even my feable ear's can hear it!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!

And this is just from NOT holding the mic during tracking???!!??
that is some crazy improvement!!!!!!

And oh yeah, the song SMOKE'S!!!!!!!! Huge, phat, git's!
the bass break's are funk0ramicij!! It's a definite chest rumbler!!

Freakin dig it!!!!!!!!!

Right on!!!!!!!! Thank's sam!

peace

Rick

Hey Sam, I like the way your playing fully exploits the guitar sounds you get. Nice unique arrangement too. The intro was a bit like a different piece but it still flows into the song good. Nice mix too buddy.

Sam, I commented in another thread on this tune. This is the response.
Typacal Sami tune. Guitar tone from hell (I'm still groping for that holy grail that you have nailed). Killer mix my friend. This is one of the dryer vocal mixes I've heard from you. And they're higher in the mix. Good man! What effect are you using?

thanks d00ds!

hey guys, besides using the stand, I dumped the deesser like Guernica suggested.. I used very little chorus, but I manually doubled just about all of it.. there are a few parts that are 3 voices.. 2 doing the same, and one harmony.. mainly during the faster part.. I'm wondering if that Digitech processor is useable.. It looks like the whole time the problem was me holding the mic.. WHAT A MORON!! :o I'm still not happy with it, but I think it's better than it was.. My other tunes really sound like shit to me now.. The vocal chain was an SM58 into a Blue Tube pre, into a Blue Max compressor.. I grabbed the chorus and reverb straight from the recorder..

the guitars went like this.. 2 tracks of Pod Pro, 1 track of J-Station, and synth bass except for the breaks.. that was my 5 string through a Sansamp Tri A.C.. I also sent 2 of the guitar tracks through a BBE Sonic Maximizer, but they all went through the Blue Max compressor.. I also pitch shifted 2 of the guitars down one octave.. the guitar was tuned to drop C#..

thanks for the comments/help everyone.. Sorry I had to bother people through p.m.'s, but it looks like it almost paid off! :D

dudes, thanks a lot! stay critical! :D

Great tune-(sorry it took me so long to get to it been busy).....Love the opening great beat on the drums -reminds me of stew copeland-wah wah guitar mwelody nice---I like the new-vocal track-craaaaazy guitar sound ~2:00-sounds like tremolo-nice sound. Definetely like the new vocals-clear...like the end change(theirs the composer in you at work again)...As usual the sound quality is great and the attention to detail is excellent. Very nice job. Amazing how you can crank out so many nice recordings.<S>--salute!

Love the intro on this tune... I feel like a waltz!

It's kind of ironic I am working on a waltz too..... But a little tamer.. :D

Still loving the change at 3:10, and still would love to see it going into another song or something.

Vocals sound really polished Sam.
Better than ever, right up there with the quality of the music, which is great btw!
Especially the harmonies.

Like SluiCe said, they sound more consistant/polished.
Sounds like hands free is the way to go.;)
(Now what are you going to do with your hands when you sing, never mind,I don't want to know!):D

The guitars are fantastic as always,HUGE!
Like raw beef!

Great job,you got it man!:D
Pete

This has got to be the worst recorded, vocally incoherent,suck-@ass performance I have ever lis............

Oh wait..........I thought this was a Father Time thread!!:D

Yo' B.Sabbad-mofo, 1st Big-Up's to your kick-@ss rock version
of my MAIN HOMEY, James Brown's "I Feel Good!!" That sh#t was
pure butta' baby!!!

2nd, you are skilled beyond beyond belief. The only thing I noticed was mic-voc technique that sometimes indicated you was a weee-bit to far from the mic 1 or 2 times when spittin' out those slammin' lyrics of yours! But again, that may be due to the Vodka I'm drinking!

I ain't got nuthin else to say that I'm Maddd Jealous of your abilities!!;) ;)

Sam:

Definately an improvement over the first one. It never ceases to amaze me how much difference mic placement can make.;)

This mix sounds great on my Altecs. Just out of curiousity, what are the dimensions of your room?

thanks a lot guys!

No one has ever asked me that before.. It's 8' x 15'.. Pretty tight and smokey, but everything is close.. It gets very loud in there, and it's not sound proofed or anything.. When I am really screaming, people outside can hear me.. They don't hear the music, just me screaming.. They really thought I was insane until I gave them a CD.. Now, they know it! :D thanks Brane!

muzeman - hey Pete, "like raw beef" :D I like that description.. It's really amazing how much of a difference not holding the mic made.. I was always holding it with 2 hands, and cupping the top.. I think that only allowed the mids through.. I don't understand mics at all.. I can't even browse the mic forum properly.. :D thanks Pete!

MISTERQCUE - I was hoping you heard the James Brown cover.. Just so you know, it was done out of respect! :D thanks Mr.Q!

Everyone, you guys have helped my recordings more than I have helped yours.. Thanks to everyone who bothered to comment on this version.. (and those who did not, I know who you are)

:D

Have a great day guys/girls!

Hey Sam, we have identical room sizes. Do you have anything on your wall...like blankets or anything. I've got the ugliest old blankets all over my walls and ceiling! I'll post a picture some time :) It's funny.

Well, you forgot the most important dimension: the height! It's not even close though. My room is 19'x 11'x 9'. Must be your mixing skills that make it sound so good.;)

I think about that late night screaming sometimes, but my neighbors already know that I'm a freak.:D

Fortunately they're OK with that.
