I've never used midi before. I'm trying to hook up an old Roland keyboard to generate some midi tracks. I've got it hooked up via midi cables to my apogee rosetta, and rosetta by firewire to my mac. When I play the keyboard, the midi in light on the rosetta flashes, but the midi out light on the rosetta is on all the time, and no midi information is reaching the computer. Anyone used this set-up? How do I get my computer to recognize the keyboard. I tried midi set-up, to add the keyboard, but the computer doesn't recognize the keyboard. Also, when I plug the cable from the rosetta midi out into the keyboard midi in, the Roland screen says "midi error".
Is this a rosetta problem? Anyone else using this set-up?

Your question is an intriguing one. I'm not familiar with Apogee equipment, so I did a search on the web. I found a user's manual so that I could look up its midi functions.

I have to say that on various websites and the manual I've struck the most confusing explanation of MIDI functionality I've ever come across.

I really need to defer to someone more expert with Apogee, because my reading suggests to me that its midi functionality is intended for midi control of the device, or for downloading upgrades to the device. I can't see where or how it is used to pass midi signals from keyboard to computer.

Nevertheless, I find it hard to believe that it wouldn't do this. I hope someone can shed light on this.

Yes, I agree the manual for the apogee unit is pretty useless as far as midi set-up. I ended up just buying a cheap midi USB interface last night, and I'll try just running directly into the computer with that. Thanks GZ,

Well, you bought the new USB-MIDI interface now, so my reply might be a bit late. I haven't used Apogee either, but some thoughts:

If the MIDI out light is constantly on, it can mean your software is sending out MIDI sync. Try to disable the MIDI sync on your software so you know if that is the cause or not.

The MIDI error message on your Roland could be becasue the MIDI buffer in being overloaded (it's having more MIDI data fired at it that it can keep up with), although this would suggest to me that it's not MIDI sync lighting up the out light.

MIDI OX is a good program for checking what MIDI signals are being transmitted and received. See www.midiox.com.
