Help Getting equip.

for the last few years ive been spending alota $$ recording is different studios or home studios.so lately i went n bought a Toshiba Satellite S35-M456 Centrino laptop(80G 7200-RPM HD, Centrino (Pentium M) processor at 1.7 GHz,512 MB ram)

and iam wanting to setup a home studio on it to practice and record mixtape traccs.Anyways,all i got right now is cool edit pro and the laptop,figurd id come see what some of you guys recomend as far as soundcards,mics,etc.and or anything else i should get.
All help much apreciated....thanks aheada time.also will the cool edit pro 2.0 i have now be aiight to use.or should i upgrade.

Depends on how many tracks you need to record at once.

The Presonus Firepod will do 8 tracks, and comes with Cubase LE for $600
 
You don't need a soundcard with the firepod.

It will accept up to 8 mics. Again, it depends on how many you need to record at once
 
Then have a look at some of the cheaper Firewire interfaces from M-Audio.

You'll also need a preamp or small mixer like the Yamaha MG10/2, some recording s/w and a mic of course
