i have been using abketon fro about 6 months after getting back into music last year (i stopped playing drums and guitar for almost ten years from 2003)
my question is I'm slowly getting the hang of the various eccentricities of music production i.e basic eying, quantising and the such. i still haven't gotten synths like massive although I'm making an attempt as well as various things like those pitch rising swells that are the bread and butter of edm pre choruses. I've done a few tracks (often times i go in with a plan to do something but i either get carried away with a melody and go off on a complete;y different tangent and give pun or i just get frustrated and give up) but most of them when i listen to them i just hear this like glued together mesh of synth, bass and drum parts i don't hear a complete song, like i can tell it was out together unlike most songs where you can hear chords and melodies and baselines but if you don't pay attention it just seems like a conglomeration of sound. i really want to take my music to the next level I'm really influenced by guys like wave racer, flume (and what so nots) as well as the prodigy or as i like to call them the liam howlett experience and crystal method. as I also play guitar I'm keen to try and fuse my two musical passions alt rock (audioslave, stone sour, alter bridge) and electronica (knife party, deadmau5, the presets) but at the moment I'm plateauing hardcore and i was wondering if there where any tips from people who've gone through this before.

thank you for reading my rambling incoherent babble

So nqcowby - in a REAL short summation - what are you trying to accomplish & what issues are you having? Kindly be specific as much as you can......

I will take a crack.

OP, first problem you are facing is you have all of these tools and building blocks and you are overwhelmed. Easily done. I think right now you should have two objectives in mind, one learn the tools (little at a time) and create music and experiment. You don't have a sound yet as you haven't created one. So patience.

Learn what each sound does, learn what each effect does (not just reading), this is a journey, you just don't know the destination yet. Create music and if I can give you a pointer, less is more. If you create a score/song with less than 20 tracks, that's OK. Four tracks is enough for a song. Hell, two tracks is enough. Just start the process and when you find your sound, you will know it. But it won't happen over night, it may take you years, but start it, post your stuff here, let us guide you through the technical process and along the way you will find your voice.

I hope this helps and answers the questions that you're not sure you have. Enjoy the discovery of music and of yourself.
