Hello---Been working with Fruity loops to create some drum loops for recording. But it seems that my cpu is running super sluggish. Does anyone know how to see the background programs that may be sucking up my resources. Or a good utility to clean up the junk.

I have done MS config and removed programs from startup but it still seems weak....I used to have 90% free at all times, now it is like 75% (according to control panel---system performance)

You could definitely use more RAM. Ctrl-alt-del will show you the programs you have running. You have Active Desktop enabled?

That CPU and RAM should be more than sufficent for what you are doing. Of course more power is always better....

Most Win98 PCs I see boot up with 75-80% free resources, but these are networked PCs running network clients. A standalone PC should have about 80-85%. 90% would be exceptional.

About all I can add is to pull up the task bar and look for anything weird. Also I intend to post a link shortly to some Windows tune-up sites, watch for it.

I agree---I could use more RAM,hell I could use a new cpu. My point is more that it was running well and now sucks. I do need some system utility to clean up the system.

What is Active Desktop?
I already went into MSConfig and removed the start up programs but that did not solve the problem.

Active Desktop is the crap that lets you put web content on your desktop. It earned its nickname Active Crashtop for a reason.

>Active Crashtop

Good One! :D

It even gets hung up sometimes when the "active desktop" is just displaying a locally stored .jpg file instead of the usual "non-active desktop" choice of some local .bmp file. The screen goes white and you then can hit the "Restore Active Desktop" button to fix it.
