Hey all, i need some help deciding on a mixer for my home studio.Thought I might have to spend a gazillion bucks but it looks like you can get em pretty cheap if you shop around.

My budget is between AUD$1000 and AUD$?????? (going for "best bang for the buck" here)

The choices so far are........all in Aussie dollars

Used Tascam 2524...........................$1800
New Behringer MX3282A.................$1499
New Behringer MX9000...................$2600
Used Soundtracs Maxi Topaz............$1200

Mixer will be used in conjuction with PC running ????? software.
I know this is very vague but I'm going to be starting from scratch when I build the new studio.

I was recording onto Cubase via a SB Platinum Audigy, but it just wasnt happening...I was getting better results with a Yamaha MDX4.

Thanks
Brett

First off make sure you really NEED (or want) a mixer and not just the preamps that come with it. If you only need the preamps, just buy preamps. If you are going the mixer route - Id advice you look at stuff outside of Behringer (e.g. Soundcraft M and E Series, and the Allen & Heath units).

Even the Yamaha MG series of mixers would be a significant improvement . Not sure what they go for in Oz.

I have had a Mackie 8 bus, a Behringer 8 bus and now have an Allen and Heath 4 bus. The A&H blows away both of the former hands down. The secret is in the summing bus amplifiers. The Mackie and behringer both have decent pre-amps if you take the output from the insert directly to the recorder. The Mackie and Behringer mixers have no headroom in the summing bus dept. The more tracks mixed, the worse it gets. I have tested all three mixers and found this to be true. I recorded with the Behringer and Mackie mixers using only the pre-amps. I mixed the tracks using the A&H bypassing its pre-amps. The A&H summing bus amps are frickin awesome. Case closed.
