Alright, this is simple...
I assume that you at least have some type of mixer and some decent mics to work with.
If you have 2 mics to work with:
1) Take the mic with the higher freq response (some sort of vocal or instrument mic) and place it on the BEATER side, about 3 inches away from the head and 3 inches next to the drum pedal.
Tilt the mic so it points straight to the point where the beater hits the drum head. That should take care of your "high end" side.
2) Next take your other mic (something with good low response) and place it on the other side of the drum head. It helps if you remove the drum head. This helps relieve some of that flat packing sound and also helps open up the sound a little more.
3) In addition to all that, it would help to have an ambient mic to pick up some of the overall effect of the drum.
I usually cut the lower end freqs off the first mic and boost the lower freqs on the second. After that it's just a matter of balancing both until you have a sound you like.
