there are some incredibly cheap, 3 for 25$ nady mic...
i konw theyd be shitty...
but what makes a mic shitty.

All i really need it to do is to pick up sound, not with great quality.
vocals, bass,guitar ,drums
i really dont wanna spend any money on mics... but would it at least come out ok in a recording?

"what makes a shitty mic?"

IMO a mic that doesn't give you a true reflection of the sound source. For example: When I sit behind the drum kit with headphones I want to hear the same thing or pretty close to what I hear with the headphones off.

Getting into recording, I have found to be opening up a big ass can of worms to deal with. Trust me it takes years to master this stuff. Ask anyone hear.

If your looking for a decent recording cheap. I would probably use a room mic or two (condensers). That being said, your room may be an issue.

Route two would be to use two 57's as overheads for drums, a 57 on guitars, Bass guitar I would DI, and of couse a 58 or 57 for the vocals. Room may still be an issue but better.

These are ideas based on what I would do..

As far as the nady mics, I havn't a clue what they sound like.

It falls apart in your hand. It sounds like ass. It has a ton of handling noise. Too low/high an output. High impedance. Feeds back easily/poor polar pattern.

I recorded a demo for a band with a radioshack computer mic. All recorded separately, drums sounded great, guitar was pretty thin but listenable, bass was DI so it was fine, and vocals weren't so hot (I think it was the singer... he was a screamer). All in all, an amazing recording for a mic below $10.

Here's what makes a shitty mic: an on/off switch

Hey! i dont get it. But thanks for all of the help...
im just gonna skimp on the mics and get the nady's...
will it really be that bad?

You will soon know, won't you?

At $8 apiece you can throw them away or give them to your neighbor kids for their karaoke machne. Try them, then come back here if you're not happy.

BTW- If the cable costs more than the mic it probably falls in the s____y category.
:) ..most decent cable are three times more.

lol yeah...
and i also need to buy stands for the mics, and cables...
a lot of money goes into recording!

kudos to all u helpers

hey up fiddler... where u live? im close to lake superior too

cables and stands.... you could really ghetto rig it and just tape 3 pieces of shielded wire from radio shack into the mic and the board and the use the leftover tape to tape the mics funiture sitting around you house :p

Well, to answer your question, a shitty mic (or any other piece of equipment, for that matter) is one that doesn't give you the result you are looking for. Most microphones, regardless of price, probably have some halfway decent utility. The trick is finding out what they are good at, and not so good at. Chances are, the Nadys will pick up some sound and let you record it. Since you are on a budget, that's probably all that you can ask.

I'm reminded of this cheap (probably $30-40, new, >15 years ago) Harmony practice amp that I have. It is entirely made of plastic and generally sounds pretty lousy. However, when you crank all the knobs to 10, there is this magical overdriven sound coming out of that little 5" speaker that would be impossible to reproduce with any "good" amp. That's the only reason I keep it around -- because when I want "that" sound, I know exactly how to get it.

awesome... i will get them. Its good that i wont be too unhappy if they turn out horrendous

11 dollar first act mics that look like sm58s arent bad(well for 11 dollars), i think they are the same as the 15 dollar behringers. Found one in circut city and bought it out of curiosity.... some things it does pretty good on

lol thanks,
i think i still have a little more dignity in me before i could bring myself to buy something from "first act"
i really am thankful for the information, but first act, come on now...
at least nady is a name.
and the behringer first act thing could be true... they may be owned by the same company, and could produce the same mic, but with different names, and charge different amounts for the mics.

Thanks for all the help

You can't be serious.

How can you have posted 155 times, and be a senior member, and ask a question like this?

I'm sensing a prank...

i am serious, why would i joke?
im asking peoples opinions on whether its worth it or not because i have never even tried such a cheap mic, and i was wondering if anybody had some thoughts...
luckily people had some good information, and they helped me a lot...
