Hello. I want to start doing some recording of my guitar tracks but i want to spend money so i can expand my recording system and I don't want to but something that i will sell later on.

Right now I have a Line 6 Pod 2 for recording guitar tracks and I have a few guitar amps. For near future (college years. Im graduating this year from HS) I just want to record high quality guitar tracks over some backing tracks, so I don't think I will need anything that I will need a multi channel mixer or anything like that.

First the soundcard. I've been eyeing on a M Audio Delta 1010 for X Mas/Birthday present. Is this a good sound card for recording and is it versatile (hook it up to mixer etc)?
Would I need a mixer or a preamp to hook it up to a mic for recording from a guitar cab? (Im planning to get a shure 57 for recording guitars)
Is it possible to plug the microphone straight into the soundcard such as the delta 1010?

Also is a studio monitor speaker system neccessary or is it just a luxury to have? Can i get decent sound from studio headphones? If so what are some good headphones?

Any other suggestion for sound cards? Im looking for a 400 to 500 dollar range. Also willing to buy used from ebay.

Thanks for reading this long post and any answer would be appreciated.

PS. Great forum by the way.

Hey Bo,
I dont think the 1010 has mic pre's. I think thats the 1010lt. If your a one man recording artist the 1010 may be overkill. Perhaps a small mixer and a delta 66, 44 or audiophile will be fine. You can run your mics thru a mixer or since you have a pod, some folks hook the outputs of this unit straight to the card. Although you would still need a mixer if you intend to do vocals. As far as monitors, they are designed for mixing with a flat response to give you the truest sound possible, not all colored like a home stereo would do. Monitors are rather expensive though, you can pick up a pair from m-audio, the SB5's for $300.00 Thats about the min. you would want to spend.
Whatever you do, try not to use headphones to mix.
If you need some accompaniment when you get going, check this:

the 1010 doesn't have pres.....you'd need some.......if this is a long term investment the 1010 might be a good buy, but right now it looks like you have no need for 10 inputs........look at it this way.......even if you were to record a four or five piece rock band you wouldn't need a 10 track card unless you were doing all live takes........with a 4 input card you could lay good drum and bass tracks and then continue to overdub...that's a pretty traditional way of doing it........if you feel like you 'need' 10 tracks then go for the 1010

hey Bo-

Delta 1010 is a good piece of gear to grow into.

I did just read a bitch fest though about how they're not terribly scalable, but these complainers are in the minority as far as I could tell.

If you're really in Wien, you might find the Euro prices a bit high.
Just what I've gathered from reading and stopping over there last May.

I'm sure you can get a hell of a deal on AKG gear, though.

actually, I got a question for you. What's the public opinion on the Vienna Vikings? I'm trying to work out a contract to play there next year and I'm just curious if you've heard of them or if they're any good.

Is that the Football team? American Football is not really popular here in Austria. But it is a really nice place to live in so you might consider that.

I didn't think Amer. football had taken off yet.

The only reason I'd go is to live in Vienna, practice my deutsch and get back in playing shape. I do agree that it is a great place to live though. My sister just spent a year at the Wirtschaft Uni. there. I visited for a month and really enjoyed it. That place Centimeter II was totally kickass.
