Hi Harvey,

I understand the ECM8000 are great O/H mics, but you had a choice between these 3, which one would you use?

1. ECM8000
2. MXL 603
3. Oktava MC012

Thanks in advance.

Imagine,

Actually, I "do" have a choice between those 3 mics, since I do own a matched pair of each. Right now, Alex switches between the Oktava MC012s and the MXL 603Ss for drum overheads, while I generally go to the ECM8000 for overheads.

I can't imagine not having all three sets here at the studio, but if you just need one pair, any of those sets will do just fine.

The most versatile is the MC012s from the Sound Room, with 3 capsules each (also the most expensive of the 3).

Then the 603Ss and the ECM8000s tie for second place, but they both have so many other uses around here, they're almost indespensible.

If I were on a very tight budget, I'd go for a pair of 603s AND a pair of the Behringers.

But, whichever you choose, you can't lose.

Harvey,

Thank you for the quick reply. Service is good here!

Having tried them yourself, are any of these mics usable for acoustic guitar/piano, and say toms, and snare?

Thanks again for your time.

All will work fine for guitar and piano, but the smaller element of the ECM8000 may be a little noisey for very soft pianos or guitars.

I'm not sure I would use any of them on toms and snare. There are better mics for those purposes.

emc8000!
pretty good on toms and snare but you have a lot of cymb. / hi-hat because of the undirection patern(omni).
this is a good thing if you don't use overheads.
If you use overhead 's then it is not a good idea on toms

With clever placement it's posible 2 record a complete drumkit with 2 mic's.

remco,

Thanks for the tip...

I'll certainly buy a couple, even If I only use them for O/H...

Why two

I recorded my set last week with a mic. yes one. uno. It was great the bass was as loud as the toms and it wwas kewl took like 1 hour to get it kewl but it was worth it

Sooo.... are you saying you used three mics?

:D

Just messing with you. :)

"why two?"

"why Two?"

I'd say the best reason for two whould be to have the recording be stereo. It is cool to have the drummer do a roll and have it cross from left to right, or visa versa.

I used to do the single omni over the drummer's head thing on my 4-track. It sounded good, was quick and easy but stereo is so much better. It just takes time & effort to get the placement right.
