Well, here's the 2nd mix with corrections from the first post. Didn't know how to re-title the post, so I did a second post. Hope that's okay.

ANYWAY. Retracked the acoustic on one side, retracked the backing vocals so they're not autotuned (well, the last note on the middle note). and used a different kick sample.

Interested to see what you guys think. Again with and without mastering suite.

No clipping on this one. :)

The acoustic's sound good. A lot like Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt"

The bass feels a little clicky. It's probably not a huge deal, but on a sparse mix, it sticks out a bit. I can't really comment on the kick drum for it since that click hit's the freq's I'd be listening for on it.

What's your FX chain on the bgvox? They feel a little dry to me. Also, are they panned far right? That seems a weird choice.

I didn't realize until I saw the "christian rock" tag that I'd lost a game of "God or my girlfriend" with this one! :D

Hey Steve! Thanks for the listen. Yeah. Made the mistake of using a pick on this one (Usually I use a felt pick for this, but I couldn't find it and had lots of Jim Dunlops sitting on the desk). Trying to figure out compressors enough to kick that out...any suggestions? Guess I could just retrack, but it sounds decent in the final.
The kick sticks out in the mastered edition quite well. The mix part doesn't kick it out as well. It's the final that matters, so I didn't mess with it.
BG's are only supposed to be about 30 off center. Have to look at that! Good catch. Straight vocal with some Unison added to make them sound fuller. Pulled most of the reverb out of this one as the verb was causing some problems with the guitar tone. Guess I need a bit more on bgs.
I just heard a flat note while I was listening. Have to hunt that down, too.

2nd mix

i like the deep tone on the acoustic,
the mix positioning brings that out nicely....

the bass, at the beginning, has that snare stick on top of the note pluck,
makes it sound like the bass has a bad click on the top end, that isn't there.

that transition at 1:08 sounds off.
something needs to drop out, or leave the bass like it is, and take out the high synth strings at that one note

the line that starts at 1:44 really drifts out of key,
i'd retrack that line, and back off of pushing it a bit, focus on just hitting the note dead on.

2:29, vocals drift out of tune again....
in fact, the rest of the song, the singing really drifts out of tune quite often....
you gotta nail those sections where the vocals really hang out there, or you just focus the fact that they are not in tune.

i dig the lyric, and in general the arrangement works quite well,
but i think the song is at least 60 seconds too long.

Gonz. You are amazing.
VERY clear, distinct, specific things! Love that.
I spent all my time (till my voice went scratchy) yesterday retracking the backing vocals so I didn't need autotune on them. Yes, I'm planning on retracking most of the main vocals. At least the entire second half, plus the one I heard just a few minutes ago (I think that's probably what you referred to at 1:44).
Thanks for all the compliments! Makes my day to find out I'm doing something right.
Part of the bass clicks are because (like I said above) I used a nylon pick instead of felt. Usually I use my fingers, but I wanted a bit of pluck on this one.
AFA length goes, I really didn't worry about it. I just built on the pieces, dropped it off and rebuilt. My favorite part is right after 3:00 where it drops to just acoustic and vocal...although the echo gets scary cluttered there (going to have to figure that out, too.)

I listened to the MS on version. I thought the stereo on it was good.

Vocal is well recorded. Performance is tentative in spots and a bit pitchy.

The bass is really loud and really boomy. You could back it down a good 3-4 dbs. A cut in the 180hz range might help.

Drums are decent. But they have the SoundCloud swirl to them. I'm sure that's SC fault and not yours.

Everything seems to conflict with everything else. It's like there is no space for anything. Things are clogged up in the 400hz - 2000hz range or so.

Thanks Trip! Yeah, the lead vocal needs some do overs. I was still learning how to sing this when I recorded it, and didn't get back to the main vocal (yet).
The first post was all about that bass. I'm trying to keep this pretty bottom heavy. I'll look at the 180 range, but I've got some falls in there that need to be really prominent. Maybe a little fader automation would be a better compromise.
Yeah, new set of drum samples for this year's stuff. I really like everything except the kick (changed it out for the 2nd song, and will probably sub the new one in here, too).
Me and my busy mixes. Work in progress, as usual :)
