okay, heres a rough preliminary mix of my attempt at judas priest's "hellbent for leather".

i like vintage metal, but playing it typically isnt my main forte, so i did the best that i could. please let me know what it needs or what you think - good or bad. all comments are welcome.

thanks.

Sounds pretty authentic....you just need to get the vocals to sit better....maybe more compression, and some verb, to give them a vibe similar to the original.

But, sounds pretty cool so far....

okay, thanks dogman. i appreciate the feedback.

added some verb to the vocals:

What are you using for drums Greg? They rock and the patterns are excellent. Your guitar playing continues to be right on the money. Definitely sounds like a seventies mix (and I have the cassettes to prove it). Vocals are sitting well in the mix on this (version 2).

Now the $64,000 question - what guitar/amp/effects/mic/line chain are you using - we need to know!

Great cut.....

:) :D :) :D

thanks ido. i really appreciate it. :)

um lets see.......

im doing everything with pretty basic stuff.

drums - a cheap 5 pc rogers kit that i bought used for 200 bucks. but, i have pretty much replaced everything with better stuff. the only thing left thats 'rogers' with the whole kit are the drum-shells themselves. actually, i think they sound good live. they sound way better than my bros comparable tama kit. anyway, pinstripe heads, sabian cymbals, pdp hardware, etc. the double-bass pedal is some no-name cheapo i bought off ebay. if they sound good, its because i pay very careful attention to tuning and do the best i can with my mic placement. i still think they can get better, but im working on it. i use 5 drum mics - all cheapo dynamic musiciansfriend package deals - all close mic'd with no overheads (my room really sucks). i bash my cymbals pretty hard, so they get picked up through the various tom mics. all of the drum mics go into a yamaha mg 10/2 mixer, and i can only record 2 tracks simultaneously, so i run a L and R output to the inputs of my tascam us-122. i pan the toms in the mixer and do some slight additional panning through the cubase software.

i did all the guitars with my SG recorded direct. my chain goes SG > digitech rp300a processor > tascam > cubase LE. i dont mic my amp hardly ever. i have one shure pg57 that would work, but my amp semi-sucks, so i dont even bother. the digitech processor allows me to create a shitload of usable sounds, so i run with it. i typically just use the processor for amp simulation, simulated mic placement, and some basic EQ'ing and leave the rest dry. i add reverb, delay, chorus, etc through the cubase software.

the vocals are one mono track that i copy and paste to another track and pan each pretty wide so i can vary the reverb and delay on each vocal track. my range and volume control sucks, so volume envelopes and lots o' compression are the norm on my vocal tracks.

so, as you can see, i use pretty simple stuff. i do the best i can with what i got and try to pay very close attention to every little detail. i feel that if i can learn to do a decent recording with this stuff, my stuff will be that much better when i upgrade to better equipment.

id also like to say that i feel my recordings have gotten way better and more enjoyable since i found this website. so, thanks everyone for all the good info. its not going to waste. :)

Second version does have some nicer sounds to the vox....Fun tune man... :D

OK...since you asked. ;)

I think your playing ability is incredibly good. I'm impressed. The sounds you get are also pretty authentic. My beef is the vocals (not the performance). I think they're too out front, but then again, Priest also mixed the vocals like that (which is what bugged me about them), so...I guess...what I'm saying is...great job!! :D

If this is really out of your realm, you've accomplished something cool! Be proud! Thanks for the listen.

I've done this myself once, and now you've inspired me to post it.

Dig it! I think you pretty much nailed this....no nits here, just really enjoyed hearing this classic, Nice job!!!
