...it's all over the net blogs that Heil's dynamic PR-40 is giving the EV RE20 and Shure's SM7 fits...is it hype or does this mic really deliver?...anybody got "real world" experience with this one?...sounds like a great alternative to a large condenser...price is right too...

i don't know,
a few years ago a guy started talking to me about those mics,
he said they are so amazing and this one type was Better than the 57

i don't know, i haven't heard them and i've only heard one person rave about it, not a big hype to me

and OH, you want to buy a REAL re20 before you start messing with the socalled "copies" or you won't ever know what the real thing sounds like

:p

I taked to Bob Heil at length at the NAMM show (I've knowm him since the 60's) and he's sending me the PR30 and PR40 to try. They sounded great at the show, but that's not a good test. I'll put them up against our RE-20 and SM7 when they come in.

We've had the PR20 since they first came out and they're a great guitar cab mic.

..THANK YOU, Harvey!...I look forward to your input.

You guys must be reading my mind! I am in the market for a new Voice Over mic without spitting out $400 for an RE20.
I heard about these Heil mics and checked out the website as well, but I've never heard much widespread discussion or review of them.
I was going to just bite the bullet and get one, come what may!
However I'll wait on Harvey's review.

...Hey Harvey...any sign of those Heil mics yet?...

...I'm sharing this thread over at Gearslutz...there's been a bit more feedback on that site...here's the link to that thread:

We've been testing the Heil PR-40, PR-30 and PR-20. Still have more listening and testing to do, but the PR-40 is easily in the same class as the SM7 and RE-20. Very smooth, solid mic.

Wow thats very solid praise for some relatively unknown microphones, and thats good news for me considering the pr-40 could save me some pennys over the sm7 and/or re20.... thanks for your initial appraisal--cant wait til the final word is here.

...hardly unknown...Bob Heil has been an audio innovator for over 40 years...very well known and respected in the broadcast field...here's some links to check out:

...check out that bin of used Ebay mics!

...with good buddy Joe Walsh (Heil invented the guitar "talkbox" with Walsh, later popularized by Frampton and Bon Jovi)

Fascinating info about bob heil... i meant no disrespect to his microphones or legacy. However, I still think 'relatively unknown' is a decent description when compared to the likes of shure, sennheiser, neumann, etc... Id bet there are a lot of people out there that know or have heard of shure/sennheiser microphones that have never heard of 'heil'. This is basically the first time I've heard of them at least, but maybe I'm just weird. ;)

I'm not quite sure, but doesn't Dave Letterman have a HEIL PR-40 on his desk these days? Look at the show tonight and tell me if I'm right.

Nevertheless I'm buying one of these next month. I only wish that the matching accessories (swing arm stands, etc) were a bit cheaper. I'm a sucker for brand loyalty! :D

...you're absolutely right...I read that the head sound engineer subbed a Heil PR-40 for the original mic..here's the press release I picked up on the net:

ON THE AIR: THE HEIL PR-40 ON LETTERMAN

Television talk show host David Letterman has a new sidekick, but its not a
he or a she. On Monday, October 10th, the audio engineer on Letterman's
nightly talk show substituted a Heil Sound PR 40 microphone for the
traditional one Letterman has used since moving his show to CBS. Another
PR-40 was used to mic the Kick drum of the group the Black Rebel Motorcycle
Band that performed on the show. While primerally designed for broadcast
and live sound applications, the Heil PR-40 is quickly becoming a favorite
among radio amateurs who want better fidelity for their rag-chew style of
communications at an affordable price. (Heil Sound)

THERE IT IS! THERE IT IS!

I'm getting one now Dude!
If it's good enough for Dave then why in the hell shouldn't I get me one too? :D

Thanks for the extra info Kidvybes!

Keep in mind that those mics are generally just props. Dave and his guests all wear clip-on lavalier mics and they typically have boom mics above the desk.

Anybody know a good online resource for the pr-40. I looked around a little while ago annd was not finding many nor any at particularly motivating prices.

The average prices that I've seen at 8th Street.com and Musicians Friend.com are around $279.

That's not a bad price to pay for a Voice Over type dynamic mic. The Shure Sm-7B is around $320 and the EV RE-20 is around $399

The PR-30 is about fifty bucks less.
