Straight Jacket Sunday Music Page

There is only one song on the page right now, it's called "Without Reason". It is a new metal tune I wrote in "B" tuning. Heavy riffs, heavy drumming, keyboards, heavy bass, and some vocals thrown in there too. I've mixed a bit different on this one than the last songs I have put out. I was being lazy and letting the limiter take care of the clipping but it would produce a cement block of a mix(like most modern music). So, I went back and eliminated all the clipping, the used the limiter for some make up volume and the wav file didn't look like a brick.

I also have a new toy, Jamstix. It is an awsome compliment to Drumkit from Hell Superior. Here is the equipment used:

AMD X2 4400+ PC
Cubase SX3
Toneport UX2
Shure Beta 87C
Epiphone Les Paul Baritone
Jackson Bass(needs some work done on it)
Edirol PCR-M50
Sonic Synth 2
DFHS
Jamstix
Voxengo Plugs
My voice box

Anyway, let me know what you think of this one. I am going to release a full length by myself of stuff like this. It's going to be a free download release. I've been colabbing with local people and I need some alone time at this point. I also did a colab with somebody from the line 6 message board and it was a fun time.

Guitars sound fekin awsome! Nice work.
Mix could so with some work.

I would play with the vox a bit, bring them up and add some more presence.
Guitars are perfect IMO.
Bass could come up a bit.
Drums should come up more.

Really good sound.

When I mixed it to prevent clipping I may have turned down the bass and drums too much, or maybe the guitar is 1 db to loud or something. Hmmm... I have the vox boosted around 120hz to make me sound bigger and boosting up in the air region. Also some boost around that 5khz region which is generally the presence region. I dip between 6.5khz and 8khz though, maybe that is taking away. My desser is set to 7.5khz...

Man... I've been getting tons of comments on the guitars everytime somebody new listens to one of my songs... Thanks...

Yep, cool guitars, again. Vox are a bit low...I love to hear your voice right up front.....it drives this shit as much as the guitars and drums. :D

Cool song man...very cool vibe. It's just in your face. Good stuff man....

Hey Monkey, yeah here comes another comment about the guitars... they sound sweet! Great job there.
Good track, I agree with what they meantioned above about the vox. They sound somewhat unclear to me. Also, on my system sounds like the track could use more bass too.
Nice use of synth here and there too.
Cool

AWSOME GUITAR SOUND!!!! Is that the tone strait out of the Toneport or did you EQ it?? If its strait out, could you save the effect into a .l6t format (Line 6 Tone File) and mabe post it up here? I have a PODxt and thats an awsome tone!!

There are the patches. It will only let me save them as gpt files. You should be able to use guitar port with your POD XT though. There are the 2 different recto sounds I use and the lead sound. There is a little after EQ, basically a low end boost, a heavy cut at 800hz, and a slight boost at 3khz. Also a high pass at 60hz and a low pass at 15khz.

Yea... I need to boost the bass up... I think I'm going to redo the vocals, in a different style... I don't know if I want any of the screaming now that I think of it. Metal is so overloaded with guys and gals screaming their freakin faces off.

You know whats odd... Going back, I almost perfer the sound of my songs being very compressed and looking like a slab of cement. There is a certain crispness to it. Hmmm... Maybe it's back to the drawing board for a bit.

I really like everything EXCEPT the guitar sound.

"When I mixed it to prevent clipping I may have turned down the bass and drums too much, or maybe the guitar is 1 db to loud or something."
I think you should go with your own advice quoted above - seems to be close to the mark

Don't worry about me & guitars - I just don't like digital distortion I guess.
Listen to early Queen (1, 2 & Sheer Heart Attack) for some good distortion or Budgie's 2nd, 3rd & 4th LPs. OR Paul Kossof etc etc.

So what is this tone port?
I have never liked Pods as they sound really fake and digital, but you managed to get that tone with one!

PLease can you explain more :p

you should try tracking a clean, dry vocal right on the top of the ones already there. that would help them 'pop', and the vox that are already there would just fatten it all up.

nice tune

The tone port is like a POD XT Sound card. It also has vocal pre amp models and bass amp models though. Yes, my sound can pretty much be had with a POD XT and the metal shop pack. Just gotta spend some time with the POD though before you get it sounding nice. When I first started with the XT everything sounded fuzzy or fizzy or whatever.

I updated back to the way I've done all my other tunes. The old one is the original and the "Without Reason" one is the new one.

Sounds pretty good, especially for Di'd guitars. The drum sounds are dead on for this type of stuff. Care to post any settings on the kick/toms? The clean section was a good shift in dynamics. Nice groove in that section as well.

The new PODxt Tones sound MUCH BETTER then the old 2.0 (Which did sound fake) I have fooled MANY people to thinking that the sound I got out of the PODxt was a real Tube Amp!! Its just All about taking the time to find a GOOD Tone..... (Almost ALL the stock tones I dont like, Mine are all custom)

Im almost disgusted on how good a distorted sound folk are getting from Dircet POD guitar recordings! :p

Cheers Monkey

The guitars are over the top awesome but dominate the mix too much
As per other comments, the bass needs and drums need a boost.

Did you record vocals as another track, then mix everything ?
How about recording the music, EQ, mix etc to create an Instrumental master (Part 1)
THEN start another project with Mixed Instrumental as your stereo tracks and record vocals into new tracks.
THEN remix the vocals with Instruments to produce your "finished product"

only a suggestion

Kick I boost around 60hz, Heavy cut at 400hz, and boost up at 7Khz. It's a pretty heavy boost at 7Khz. Toms are similar, except they don't need as much of a boost at 7Khz. And Instead of 60hz, I think I boost at 100hz. I use the DW Kick1 with the plastic beater setting in DFHS and the premier toms...

I like to mix everything together. I've tried the instrumental mix down then add vox on top method... I just prefer mixing it all together. I'm going to hopefully get some time mixing with my monitors this weekend and do some more work on the track, and re track the vocals. I have another tune I'm working on also, so I have that to finish up.

No need to do it like that.
Just work on the vox in the mix. Best, as you can cut space out of guitars, bass etc. if need be if boosting certain EQ on vocals dosent get them to work in mix.
