Cool guitar playing - is that a dobro guitar? The tone/volume is very level so I'm going to guess compressor or maybe direct... I like it...

The Chasing Blue Dreams verse is too out of sync vocally for me. I'd pick one or the other vocal tracks.

This is a good piece because it has several interesting parts put together to tell the story. That being guitar and vocal parts....

The mix is good overall, nicely balanced and good ambience...

I'd be interested to know what your signal chain is....

I wish i had a dobro! it's a just an accoustic with some super thin strings. i plugged directly into my 8-track. just restrung it and tuned by ear. I wanted a swampy sound for the slide. clean tone. no comp or fx.

as for the vocals... i know. I was very displeased that they didn't match up very well. I am going to see if I can't sync them better. I kind of liked the odd harmonies they created. Thanks for listening as well as the kind words!

You do get the swamp in the intro. The strumming thereafter is too fast for swamp things though the progression is perfect.
The vox are too far forward.
Is that distortion on the heavily played chords or just the result of the light strings?
The synch problem throws up some interesting results - I like it. Agina too far forward in the mix.
Probably need some swamp reverb across the mix too.
Some excellent ideas so far.
Akron - I bought a bunch of LPs of Akron bands in the late 70's - Pere Ubu, The Rubber City Rebels comp, Devo etc.

Any suggestions for dampening the vox? I have already compressed them. I tried to lower volume, but it is hard for me to understand the words when I do this. It kind of bleeds into the guitar too much for for my taste. but then again, the chorus i added to vox was after I attempted volume changes. I will check it out whn i get a chance to work on it.

yeah, the distortion is from the light strings. I didn't like it at first, but after listening to it a few time, it kinda grew on me. more of a live sound to it, imo. and I was thinking about adding some slide and reverb throughout the mix, but apart from one part where it has the slide behind it (the quick picking) I wanted it to be playable on one guitar. also, i recorded the two parts seperately without a metronome or any type of rhythm so it is kind of hard for me to sync. but again, i am going to do some more work on it tonight.

I am only in akron working. when my contract is up, i will be back in my home! yay for stl! I haven't seen much of a music scene since I have been here.

Just my opinion -

The guitar sound has a piezo-ish honk to it - a condenser microphone and some compression will really improve the guitar tone, especially for the slide parts - to give them more sustain and bring out more detail.

The low vocal harmony is not working for me.

You're clearly a talented guitar player. This song would sound a lot better recorded "right" in my opinion.

I got busy workin on some other riffs tonight and slacked on this. but i plan on redoing most of it on sunday. i have heard lots of peeps say the same about the low range vox. I think I am going to take them out if i can't get the harmonies synced. i do like the 4ths and 5ths they produce in parts as well as the low echo at the end of the lines, but after listening to it a lot, they are an ear sore in a few parts.
