Im after moving up in the world from Audacity to Cubase ai6 and Im trying to get used to its more compex interface .I hope this isnt too stupid a question .

Im wondering if it is possible for me to put an effect on an instrument and hear it as I play as opposed to recording without an effect and then applying one later ?How do you do this ?I can only see how to do it to a piece that has been recorded .Is there a website I can download effects from ? The instrument is an electric bass played through a yamaha usb interface .

I'm not familiar with Cubase, but wouldn't it just be as simple as applying the effect to the channell your instrument is going into? I can't see how that wouldn't work.

i do try that but the effect is only on the recorded piece not on the actual input as i play

When you Arm the track to record are you turning the Monitoring on as well? I'm not 100% how it's done in Cubase. In Reaper you switch Monitor on and you hear the effect in real time as you record. The track is still dry if you remove the effect.

Or you can set up another tracker with your effect and then use a send from the track you're recording to the effect.
