Hear everything while recording vocals?

Ok, I am a bit confused. I plan on having this as my setup:

- Behringer UB 802 or Alto S-6 Mixer
- 1/4" out from mixer to 1/4" in on Maya MK2 or other soundcard
- mic my guitar amp and play guitar on track and record to PC using Acid 4.0
- Then I want to listen to the guitar track (and drum loops) while I record my vocals on a separate track and being able to hear other tracks as well as my vocals and control the volumes of each separately.

Is this something I can do with the hardware/software I listed above? I thought so but then I came across this thread the other day that said you needed some sort of headphone preamp (????) in order to hear both your vocals and the other tracks, while recording your vocals.

Can this be done with just the mixer, soundcard, and software as long as I have headphones plugged into the board or somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

Dazed and Confuzed.

Do either of those mixers have aux sends?

If so, turn the send all the way up on the mixer channel you are recording vocals to, and connect to the pc via the send outputs. This will let you manipulate the mix while the signal going through send remains unchanged.

Headphone amps are necessary if you don't have sends, if you are using those sends for other purposes, or if you want to give each person recording their own mix to play against.

Run it like this: UB802 FX Send>soundcard Input, soundcard Outputs>UB802 channel 3/4. Turn up the FX knob on the Mic channel and set the level with the software meters. DO NOT turn the FX knob all the way up or you will overdrive the soundcard input. Now by using the Level knob on channel 3/4 you can balance the recorded tracks to the one you are recording.[ in your case vocals]

Cyrokk: Not sure. I am a total noob when it comes to this stuff bt I read the product description of the Behringer and it says it has "1 post fader FX send per channel for external FX devices" and also "1 stereo aux return for FX applications or as separate stereo input"

Are either of these what you mean?

Ocnor: Although none of that makes sense to me, I am assuming you have this setup or already know it has the proper sends or FX knobs you mention? If so thanks and I will try this as soon as I get the equipment. I was making sure before I bought this that it could do what I need it to do.

Thanks again, and any other comments are welcome

Yes, the "1 post fader FX send" is what you can use to send the signal to your pc.
