Anyone know any good headphones for all around recording/playing use. I do a lot of my editing in the house and traveling which doesn't allow me to always use my monitors. I don't think earbuds would be any good; I figure something that can keep my sound in and others out. Yeah it kinda sucks, but heahphones on the laptop in the airport beat nothing at all. Anyone have any expirience or reccomendations?

For isolation the Sennheiser HD280's are very good. But they can be a litle tight on the head when used for long sessions. For long term comfort, the Beyer 770's are excellent, although not quite as much isolation as the Sennheisers. (They also differ tonally - the Beyers are darker sounding.)

For editing on the run both would work fine. For mixing I wouldn't use either - for that kind of accuracy you need an open cup design - but that means you get no isolation from the outside (and everyone around you will hear what you are hearing).

The other usual suspect is the Sony 7506, if you can deal with a very bright sound - but they are a little more fragile for travelling use.

why do i get the feeling that all the headphones u just recommended are like >$200 lol

Will you use them around noisy home
environment, such as with TV on?

Is this just for basic cutting or will you
do some mixing as well?

I know the 7506 and 280 are around $100.
I've used both of those.

I use and like the Beyer 770's....very nice IMO.

The most noise I will get would be a tv in another room, or voices in the kitchen. Maybe some ambient airport noise when I get stuck in Detroit like I always do; but I can tend to find queit spots there.

I have tried the 280's and liked them.

I will be doing mostly just cutting, I'd like to avoid mixing with headphones; but if I were, which I might consider, what would you recommend?

[Edit]: Any open cup headphone recommendations? Aka ear cup?

Oh, and I almost forgot; anyone has expirience with pilot comm sets?
I have a David Clark helicopter headset that I inherited but haven't been able to try out because I have not bought the adapter yet. I bet they are good for isolation. :D

The isolation is probably extremely good, but I bet the freq. response for music would be dissapointing. Those are generally optimized for spoken word communications over two-way radios. Probably a lot of mids without much lows and highs

But then you inquire about open-back headphones?

If you want to keep your sound in and
other sounds out than means closed
back.

Hi, I second the mention of the AKG240's. Whatever you do, don't get those cheapier Sennheiser ones, the HD, something or other. They are so bad. I couldn't even the hear the bass I just recorded, my $20 Sony's I purchased at Eckerd's were way better for all around use. For recording and more detailed pursuits, you have to spend the moolah. Hope you find ones to your liking, psingman

The Sennheiser 600 series is a reasonably priced way to get into an excellent open cup design. They are more expensive than the closed headphones that were recommended earlier, but not ridiculously more expensive.

I know I am going to need a good closed back set. I figure I may have the need to get an open cup set.

Either way, thanks all for the input.
