I'm going to be buying a pair of headphones. I will be using them for audio recording and mastering, playing guitar, listening to music, and for my laptop. They have to be durable because I expect to get a lot of use out of them.

My price range is $100-200 and so far I'm looking at the AKG K240 ($99) and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro ( ~$170).

Has anyone had any experience, or any other suggestions? Thanks.

SONY 7506 are pretty good imo...but I haven't listened to the others you mentioned.

I'm hooked on the Ultrasone series. I have the HFI-650, but these are very good too.

Give them a look and a listen --- if possible.

In addition to the ones already mentioned all of which are very good, you should give the ATH M40f's as well as the Sennheiser 280's a listen.

i never used the 2 you metioned, but i personally liek the ATH-M20 vyr cheap and very good.

and my all time favorite headphones direct sound isolation headphones. most amazing pair of headphones i ever put over my ears. drums have never sounded so amazing through those things

I have the K240s's and the M40f's and can say with out a doubt that the K240s is a better set of cans. They would be my recomendation.

Sennheiser hd280's and ultrasones are my vote. BTW, you really shouldn't try to do much mixing/mastering with headphones...

i agree on that note. use monitors to mix/master.

trust me, things soudna lot different on headphones then they do on monitors. you could miss a lot beleive it or not.

if not for tracking....

a pair that just blows the others away... its AKG K701

the best price I've seen is $299 at headphone.com

they are absolutely fantastic. it's like having a great sounding mixing room on your head. the imaging is very wide and deep. plenty of bottom but not hyped like the 7506. the top is very smooth and detailed.

note though, things like reverb and delays may not translate well and monitors should be the last resort, but you'll have to clean yourself up after listening to the K701.
