jus a quick question...
when doing recording takes, say im trying to lay down some drum tracks to a song, i might just want a scratch guitar part as a guide for me, the drummer, whilst im playing. of course tho, i want to be able to hear myself via the mics and the guitarist via his micd up amp, or his direct input into the mixer, or wateva. and likewise the guitarist can hear me via the mics and himself. now for this you need to be able to have an output for headphone mixes?

my question is, would this be a seperate output from the mixing desk i would be using, or from the computer soundcard? its nothing ive investigated before, and a figure it may be quite important if recording alongside a guitarist?

thanks for responses in advance, Steve

nothing as yet. im merley building up my knowledge before i dive head-first into buying. but the two consoles i am considering are the yamaha mg16/6, and the mg24/14. im still undecided. the reson of my question is when ive been into recording studios before with my band, weve had headphone mixes etc for ourselfs. if the headphone outs are from the mixers, maybe its a thing i need to be looking out for in the mixing desk spec.? whether headphone outs come "as standard" on all mixing desks, or whether the headphone mixes do not come from the mixer, but somewhere else i.e. the soundcard on the computer? information on this would be much appreciated!

thanks, steve

if you get one of these mixers, what you would do is turn up the aux sends on the channels you want sent to the heaphones (generally an aux that will be prefader)...then patch out of the aux send into an headphone amplifier which will supply signal to all the headphones you need. those mixers also all have a headphones out...but that'll probably be post fader. meaning if someone is tracking and the engineer is changing fader volumes on the other tracks, you'll hear him doing that which can be annoying.

i see, so it can be done. thats ok, i jus wanted to make sure because it would be annoing having got the stuff n then not being able to jam with the guitarist, if yous ee what i mean. well, thanks alot for your help!

Steve

i use a stage snake with the main mixer in my room and a little mixer near the snake box in the basment i plug the mics into the snake tht goes into the main mixer and the guitar into the main mixer the guitarist in my room im on the drums i plug the snake returns to the main outs of the mixer and at the other end i plug it into the lil mixer and my headphones go into the lil mixer so the drummer plays by headphones, guitarist plays by the moniters

oh yea forgot we record using the subouts cuz i only got a fostex vf80
