when trying to listen to what ive just recorded on my tascam 4-track, i can only get the sound to come in on the left headphone. i use normal headphones (not stereo) with a 1/4 inch adapter. can anyone help?

Do your headphones only play on one side regardless of what they are plugged into? If not - then make sure all your controls are set right. Try to narrow down what might be causing the problem

yeah they work fine in a cd player. i think it might be the recording in mono thing, ill take a look at it. thanks.

It sounds as if you have everything panned to the left. Try to pan your mix like joro said.

If you have a Portastudio product from TASCAM, you must use a real stereo pair of headphones!
You can not substitute with mono cans and an adapter as far as I am aware.
Most evey manual I have read on the subject from TASCAM products warns that you will damage the electronics in your Portastudio or mixer doing what you have done.
It is possible that you have already shorted out one side of the headphone amp buy plugging in the wrong jack and blown the headphone amp on one channel. This would explain why you are experiencing what you described.
If I am right about this, you'll need to get your machine serviced by a technician to replace the parts that you shorted out.

Stereo headphones come with either 1/8" or 1/4" plugs. The size of the plug is not what's critical here.
What is critical is that it have a TRS connection point. This means there are three separate contact points on the plug.
The Tip of the plug is the left channel positive connection.
The Ring is the right channel positive connection.
The Sleeve is the common ground connection.
TRS means Tip/Ring/Sleeve.
A mono head phone plug has only two connection points on the plug.
Tip is the positive and common to both sides of the headphones.
Sleeve is the common ground to both sides of the headphones.
Get the picture?
As for your question;

im not sure if you have read my other post (sorry i've split this problem into two threads), but i'm now thinking that it may be best to just save my money and keep going with the mono headphones with the adapter. however, i'm not sure if this could increase the problem to the point of the amps not working at all?

Ok. I'll take one final stab at this and bow out of this conversation.
Invest two dollars in a cheap pair of walkman stereo headphones and put an adapter on the end of that two dollar walkman plug to make it into a TRS, 1/4" stereo headphone plug.
Plug that into your portastudio and see if both sides work.
If it does work with stereo headphones, your problem is solved.
If it doesn't work on both sides then your headphone amp is indeed blown on the one channel and will likely bring the other side down shortly from continually shorting out an electronic circuit.
For the love of god, man! Don't use those mono headphones on that Portastudio. You are killing your machine with those.
One final word.
Do not start multiple threads for the same problem. This is a hr.com no no as you end up getting disjointed advice from different groups of people who haven't read the duplicate threads.
You make people work twice as hard to help you and that's not nice considering your price of admission here.
Get it?

i took your advice and tried out the stereo headphones, and i still cant hear the right side. i think i'll just have to live with this for now, maybe when i save up some money i'll have it serviced. but thanks very much, if i had kept going with those mono headphones, i'd be in a lot deeper!
