can anyone reccommend headphones that block out all/most outside sound?

Dirt cheap solution

If you aren't worried about quality,
try my $20 trick:

Buy a pair of ear buds, the kind without any sort of strap, or any too large bit of plastic sticking out (you'll see why in a sec).
Then buy a pair of those industrial hearing protector earmuff things from Home Depot and cover the ear buds with them.
If the ear buds are too large then the
earmuffs won't comfortably cover them up..

The isolation is quite good, the ear protectors work in both directions.
You're sound quality is limited by how good a pair of ear buds you can find..

The biggest problem I have is that I go through like 2 pairs of headphones every session I do with drums because they get cooked by deaf musicians. I think earbus would melt...

And that would hurt!

Although, are you cranking the
drummer's headphones cause they
can't hear over the drum sounds?
Cheers,
Gord

touche', so if I do your idea it may block out the drums enough, hmmm next project I'll try it

I've got a set of AIWA HP-X222s that get me all the isolation I need.

Circumaural, or course.

yeah

yeah man..those look like exactly what he is looking for..and just as a point of reference, the good yellow foam earplugs (like they use at plants and stuff) lower outside noise roughly 33b

Yo Jon of "Da" Ghetto:

Whatever set of cans you buy, DO NOT buy the Direct Sound's Extreme Isolation cans.

I bought a pair. They work all right but they compress your HEAD. The gear is way, way too tight on the noggin.

Besides, their sound quality is only in the fair range. My Beyer 250's are very comfortable and sound way better.

But, I'm not sure if the 250's would isolate enough for your work.

a good mix of sound quality AND sound rejection would be the Sennheiser HD 280 pros. I've had a pair since just before Christmas, and they're great.

I am in the market for some phones that sound decent and have good isolation as well. Does anyone know of some cans under $50 that could fit the bill? At this point my favorite headphones are some mid-level Optimus junkers that I bought on sale for $15. Since then I have purchased others (much more expensive) and listened to high cost AKG's that my friend owns, but none of them sound as smooth as these Optimus phones. Unfortunately these phones are not isolated at all and I have to suffer with crappier sounding phones when I am tracking. Suggestions please.

The Audio Technica ATH-M30 got a pretty good review in one of the mags I take - very good isolation, with lot less bass hype than the 7506's - I think I saw them for around $75, not positive - the ATH-M40 goes for $99 at places like GC, so the 30 would be less. This is NOT a personal listening report, try 'em yourself -

hint: if you can't hear the chaos bleeding thru them at any GC I've ever been in, then the isolation is DAMN good... Steve
