Headphones on a Delta 1010

I am switching from a USB soundcard with a built in headphone amp to a 1010. I can't figure out how I am supposed to hook up headphones to the 1010 so I can here my song while tracking. I know this is a very basic question but I could really use the help. Thanks. I have a feeling I may need a headphone amp. But I am not sure.
 
You need a headphone amp or mixer.

Another alternative would be to use a home stereo receiver/amp. Plug two outputs (outputs 1 and 2 of the delta) into the AUX on the amp (you will need 1/4" to RCA) and monitor that way with either headphones or speakers.
 
Thanks Emeric. So does that mean that most headphone amps have a left and right 1/4 input in them? What headphone amp would you recommend. I do not need something amazing, the cheaper the better, this is just for tracking and for double checking mixes. Thanks.
 
I use to have a couple Alesis headphone amps, I don't see them on their site anymore, don't remember the price either. They worked pretty well. Doesn't matter since it appears they don't make them.

Some have 1/4" stereo input, which would require an adapter of some sort from the delta, no big deal. Others have 2 1/4" left / right.

Do a yahoo search on 'headphone amp' and you will get lots of links from cheap ones, build it yourself ones to expensive ones.
 
So if I were to use my mixer, would I just run my outs of the 1010 into channels 1 and 2 inputs on my mixer and then use the headphone out?
 
...or you could run the outputs from your Delta 1010 into your existing soundcard's LINE IN and monitor from whatever speaker system you already have hooked up to your computer. You may need a $10 adapter from Radio Shack to run stereo. That should be your only cost.

I have no internal soundcard other than the 1010. I tried putting the out into my mixer, but for some reason everything I have done yields a Mono sound. When I put the lines straight to my monitors it is fine, but when I put it through my mixer it is all mono. Anybody help me? Thanks
 
Don't do this!!!! You'll be taking the analog output from the delta, inputting it into your existing (probably not-as-good-as-the-delta) soundcard, converting it into digital (possibly), and then reconverting it back to analog. That's way too many unneeded conversions - not to mention going through the soundcard's (possibly noisy) analog circuitry. Your monitoring chain will be completely degraded if you do this! Although this won't affect recording quality, it WILL affect your ability to mix properly since you won't be hearing playback as well.
Why not plug your speaker system directly into the delta's output?

You should be going from Out 1/2 (or 3/4 or whatever pair you use for the main wav output) into either
-A stereo channel on the mixer
-2 mono channels on the mixer, BUT make sure you pan each channel completely to the R or L.

Oh, I just read you're using 2 mono channels, so make sure you pan them!

OK I have tried everything and I can only get mono out of my mixer. Is there anyway of skipping the mixer and just use my monitors out of 1/2 and a headphone mixer or reciever out of 3/4? I think this would work but it doesn't give me an option under my patchbay router tab to have 3/4 listen to my monitor mixer. Please help. Thanks.
 
you could go the cheapo route and just buy a stereo Y-adapter and plug your headphones straight into the Delta... it's what I do. I have AT ATH-M40fs headphones and surprisingly, I can get them plenty loud. the impedance loading might cause it to not sound as good/loud as it could, but quite frankly i can't notice any difference between this and the dedicated headphones amp on my MOTU 1224. and it can still get loud enough to put on a masher drummer's head and cause all sorts of ear damage :)
 
But how can I put these in and my monitors at the same time getting the same mix?
 
It doesn't give the option of routing the monitor mixer to more than the 1\2 outputs. Any suggestions?
 
Chill out dude, I don't do this for mixdown. Only as monitoring while laying down tracks.

set your recording software to output to 1/2 and 3/4, directly, instead of going through the monitor mixer. most software should be able to do this no problem.
