Headphones instead of speakers for monitors?

If I'm REALLY strapped for cash can I get away with a decent pair of headphones instead of a pair of monitors?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Also, can you recommend me some cheap headphones anyway (the cheaper the better).

Not really. It changes the relationships of the different sounds because ears react differently to headphones because of the differences in ears. You CAN learn to compensate, but it takes a lot of time, and a long trial and error learning curve.

The advantage is that it takes the room factor out of the listening equation. The disadvantage is that it takes the room factor out of the listening equation.
