If I were only recording myself, I would do exactly what you are doing; find some very comfortable, high quality phones for my personal use.

Right, Harvey. My home studio is mostly for my personal stuff, and that determines my equipment choices. Good monitors and cans give me ongoing pleasure at all stages of my hobby. When I sometimes work in a local studio, though, I see plenty of Tier-B phones lying around, falling to the floor, being stepped on. In that situation, as a studio owner, I'd certainly choose different phones, too. Even there, though, I always appreciate at least decent phone sound to, well, help insprire me. (I need all the inspiration I can get.)
