People are no damned good
My wife is interested in getting me a head worn mic--not wireless--for live gigs. I've looked at a couple, Shure WH30XLR, Audio Technica ATM75, AKG C 520, Rode HS1, though I haven't tried any.

I usually use a Shure SM58 for vocals. As the name implies, I'm an acoustic player, though I do plug in the guitars (and dulcimer and banjo, though not the autoharp.) I don't Dylan out with a harmonica (for which audiences should be truly grateful.)

Anyone have any comments, other suggestions, advice? Not the kind of thing you can return easily (for health reasons), I would imagine and price is an object. The Rode at $299 is more than I really want to shell out, but doable.

I have no technical comment on headset mics...as I've never really used them....
...but I always found the look of them on "rock" performers rather lame.
Maybe it's 'cuz I away see those on telemarketers and all the Tony Robbins, "self-help gurus". :D

I can understand why the Brittney/Jackson type of "dance" performer would use them...but personally, I would always lean toward a typical mic & stand combination for more straight forward band and guitar & vocal use.

What Miroslav said. The quality of such mics is really poor, when evaluated by bang-for-buck. The only reason to use one is if you do a huge stage show with coordinated dancers. Real men use mic stands and cables. You'd be better off spending the money upgrading your vocal mic, instead of downgrading it.-Richie

Thanks for the advice, gents. As to upgrading the current mic--I think I'll stick with the Shure SM 58, if I stay with a stand and cables. $200-300 can buy some other tasty equipment, though...Just have to convince my wife--there's a task!

This is great to hear ..... for head worn microphones all sound like poop.

I have the ATM75. It's "okay"-ish. Kind of a high noise floor. Very limited frequency response range. Obviously meant for LIVE work. Or troublesome singers who can't keep an orientation to a mic. In the right situation it can be a decent mic. But per your health concern, virtually no resale value. Outside of listing it for better part of two years on craigslist. If you factor in things like not needing a mic stand or pop filter, it's an okay deal. The ATM75 could probably use a pop filter, but usage kind of dictates that it rides above and just outside of the mouth exhaust zone. Not just for looks, but because any other configuration and you might as well be prank calling as the heavy breather.

That does remind me of the major draw back of head worn microphones Shadow!

Every little thing you say is picked up from I'll have a black and tan to the waitress to the Oh S!it! when you make a mistake.
